A 21-year-old man has been found guilty of the murder of Cork postman Barry Daly.

Mr Daly, who was 44, died of catastrophic head and facial injuries that were inflicted with a golf club in Doneraile, Co Cork last October.

Alex Deady of Glen View, Convent Road in Doneraile and two teenage boys, who cannot be named because of their age, went on trial last month charged with the murder of the father-of-five.

Deady and the older teenager, who is 17, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Mr Daly but not guilty to his murder.

After deliberating for 11 hours and 51 minutes, the jury of five men and six women this afternoon unanimously found Deady guilty of murder.

The jury will return on Monday to consider its verdict in respect of the 17-year-old teenager.

During the trial, the other teenager, who is 16, entered a plea of not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter. This plea was subsequently accepted by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The trial first opened before Ms Justice Siobhán Lankford at the Central Criminal Court in Cork on 4 June.

The court was previously told that Mr Daly died from an inhalation of blood after suffering multiple fractures to his face and jaw outside his home in the early hours of 12 October 2025.

The previous day, Doneraile’s local GAA team had won the north Cork Junior B hurling championship and people in town had been out celebrating.

The deceased had been attending the celebrations with another man when there was an altercation and Deady’s girlfriend was punched.

The trial heard that after the altercation on Main Street in Doneraile, Mr Daly and the other man left and went to Mr Daly’s home at Rockview Terrace on the outskirts of the town.

Senior Counsel for the prosecution Lorcan Staines previously told the jury that it was the State’s case that Deady and the two teenagers on trial then set out walking to Mr Daly’s home.

The court was told that all three were alleged to have a golf club, and Deady was shirtless.

The jury heard how one Good Samaritan had earlier tried to calm the situation as the trio went towards Mr Daly’s home with the golfclubs but was headbutted by one of the teenagers.

A doorbell security camera from a house in the area recorded Deady as saying he could not wait to see the imprint of a 5-iron golf club on the face of Mr Daly.

Mr Daly was found dead or dying in the front garden of his home with catastrophic head and facial injuries inflicted by a golf club.

Deady had insisted that he never intended to fatally injure Mr Daly but the jury disagreed and they found him guilty of murder.

This afternoon, Ms Justice Lankford asked the jury if more time would help them to reach a verdict in respect of the 17-year-old accused.

The jury foreperson indicated that it would and the judge then asked the jury to return to Cork Courthouse on Anglesea Street on Monday at 11am to continue their deliberations.

A 21-year-old man has been found guilty of the murder of Cork postman Barry Daly.
