Co Meath<\/a>, McGrath graduated in 1996 from the National University of Ireland. He received his general practitioner\u2019s licence in the UK in 2006. Jailing McGrath, the judge told him: \u201cYour lies appear to know no bounds.\u201d<\/p>\nMcGrath, who was released from prison in July 2025, has appeared before a medical practitioners tribunal service hearing in Manchester accused of misconduct.<\/p>\n
The General Medical Council (GMC) claimed the doctor\u2019s fitness to practise was impaired due to his convictions, for which he continued to blame others and refused to \u201caccept responsibility\u201d.<\/p>\n
The tribunal agreed, noting he had \u201ccontinued to shift blame to others\u201d, lacked insight, and any remorse he had demonstrated was \u201cself-serving\u201d.<\/p>\n
Given the \u201chigh risk\u201d of repetition and ongoing risk to the public, it concluded the doctor\u2019s fitness to practise was impaired. This is an assessment of a doctor\u2019s ability to practise their role \u201csafely and effectively\u201d and includes their professional and personal behaviour.<\/p>\n
The tribunal will now have the option of imposing a sanction, which includes imposing restrictions on his practice, a suspension or striking him off the medical register.<\/p>\n
The tribunal heard how McGrath had appeared before the court of appeal just days after his release from prison in an attempt to correct what he claimed were \u201cfactual inaccuracies\u201d relating to his trial.<\/p>\n
But Charles Garside, for the GMC, said McGrath had made \u201cwild allegations\u201d against the trial judge, witnesses and prosecution, and had also sought to blame others, including his estranged wife.<\/p>\n
McGrath had shown a \u201ccomplete lack of remediation and insight\u201d, he said, while his evidence was \u201can attempt to attack his convictions and the basis for them\u201d.<\/p>\n
In evidence, McGrath admitted misconduct but claimed it fell \u201cat the lower end of the spectrum of seriousness\u201d.<\/p>\n
His misconduct was unrelated to his clinical work, he said, and he had received \u201cno benefit\u201d from the mortgage or insurance fraud as the missing items were not covered by his policy.<\/p>\n
No financial institutions had lost out, he said, and his mortgage remained fully secured against his property, which he said was now worth \u201csubstantially more\u201d than the outstanding loan.<\/p>\n
During his trial at Luton crown court, the jury heard how he faced \u201csignificant financial pressure\u201d, yet McGrath told the tribunal that at the time of the fraud he had about \u00a3700,000 (\u20ac817,000) in cash and almost \u00a32 million (\u20ac2.3 million) worth of artwork.<\/p>\n
He blamed his actions on the convergence of three \u201cexceptional pressures\u201d, including events relating to his \u201ctoxic and dysfunctional marriage\u201d, fraud committed by contractors renovating his property, and \u201clong-standing PTSD\u201d.<\/p>\n
