Members of the Arranmore RNLI had one of their longest callouts on record this week as they came to the rescue of a boat with engine problems.<\/p>\n

They were tasked to assist the stricken vessel by the Malin Head Coast Guard Centre at 2:22pm on Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The boat which required assistance was stranded 13 miles to the northwest of Tory Island, and had five people onboard when it’s mechanical troubles began.<\/p>\n

Seven volunteer crew members from the Arranmore lifeboat were deployed to assist the vessel.<\/p>\n

Once they arrived, it was decided that the safest course of action would be for the lifeboat to tow the vessel all the way back to shore.<\/p>\n

Arranmore RNLI Coxswain Kieran O\u2019Donnell said it was the best course of action.<\/p>\n

“We carefully assessed whether establishing a tow was the best course of action to rescue people in danger,” he said.<\/p>\n

“In the absence of a more suitable vessel and given the risks related to the vessel\u2019s condition and location, it was determined that towing was the best course of action for all involved in this instance.”<\/p>\n

Another challenge the lifeboat crew faced was bad weather, with high gusts of wind making the tow far from a routine job.<\/p>\n

“Weather conditions at the time were quite challenging with wind force seven, gusting to force nine and swells of six – seven metres at times,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I would like to thank the fishing vessel who stayed at the scene until we had the boat under tow and a very special word of thanks to the lifeboat crew on board who generously give of their time to answer the call day and night to save lives at sea.”<\/p>\n

The boat was eventually towed all the way to the safety of Burtonport Harbour, where the lifeboat refuelled and returned to anchor at 3:15am.<\/p>\n

The crew on board the lifeboat were: Coxswain Kieran O\u2019Donnell, relief mechanic Reamon O\u2019Donnell, Sharon O\u2019Donnell, John Sailor Boyle, Joe Doherty, Evan O\u2019Donnell, and Bernard John O\u2019Donnell.<\/p>\n

New crew member Bernard John, whose family has an unbroken record of serving with the Arranmore RNLI since 1883, said it was the longest call he had ever been a part of.<\/p>\n
