Derry City’s awful season continued, as bottom side Waterford secured a deserved 4-2 win at the Brandywell.<\/p>\n
In truth, while Derry hit the woodwork on a number of occasions, the Munster men always looked lively on the counter-attack and after running into a 3-0 lead, they never really looked back.<\/p>\n
The basement men broke the deadlock on 13 minutes as Lonergan netted his third penalty of the season against the Foyelsiders, firing high into the top corner after referee Declan Toland had felt that Conor Barr had handled Will Johnson’s flick inside the box.<\/p>\n
The woodwork denied Derry minutes later as Adam O’Reilly’s 25 yard strike, which had Waterford keeper Stephen McMullan, clipped the crossbar.<\/p>\n
The Blues were denied twice in quick succession by Brandon Fleming, as the City left-back headed off the line on both occasions; firstly denying John Mahon and then nodding the ball away from underneath his crossbar to keep out Padraig Amond’s header.<\/p>\n
City should have equalised on the half-hour mark as Liam Boyce’s clever pass released O’Reilly, but after bursting into the box and with only McMullan to beat, the midfielder shot straight at the keeper from close range.<\/p>\n

On 68 minutes the woodwork came to Derry’s rescue as Conor Noonan’s delightful 20 yard free-kick, which had Maher beaten, came crashing back off the bar.<\/p>\n
Soon after Waterford doubled their lead, some sections of the Brandywell faithful started chanting ‘Tiernan Lynch it’s time to go home’ and uneviled a ‘Lynch Out’ sign.<\/p>\n
Incredibly the basement men added a third on 77 minutes as Hayden Cann broke clear down the right before his low cross found Amond, who gleefully side footed home from close range.<\/p>\n
Derry hit the woodwork for a second time moments later but Michael Duffy’s angled drive from the left came crashing back off the post.<\/p>\n
Duffy did play his part in City’s consolation goal on 82 minutes as the City skipper’s left wing corner found Slevin and the centre-back headed home from close range.<\/p>\n
Incredibly the home side scored a second three minutes later as Cameron Dummigan’s initial long shot was tipped onto the post by McMullan, the midfielder picked up the loose ball inside the six yard box before finding O’Reilly, who made no mistake from close range.<\/p>\n
Right at the death the visitors netted a fourth on the counter-attack as substitute Jorgen Voilas nipped past Maher, who raced out of his penalty box, before calmly slotting the ball home into the unguarded net.<\/p>\n
