Residents throughout Ireland are being reminded to recognise the warning signs of mpox<\/a> following confirmation of multiple new infections in recent weeks.<\/p>\n The HSE’s Health Protection Surveillance Centre<\/a> (HPSC) reported that five mpox cases, previously referred to as monkeypox,<\/a> have been documented in Ireland during the past 12 weeks. This alert follows a significant surge in cases across Northern Ireland, where 21 infections have been identified within the last three weeks.<\/p>\n Nevertheless, despite these recent detections, the HSE maintains that the general risk of contracting mpox in Ireland remains minimal.<\/p>\n The health authority stated: “Mpox is an uncommon infection caused by the mpox virus. It is most often found in parts of central and east Africa. Since 2022, a small number of people in Ireland have been diagnosed with mpox.”, reports the Irish Mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n “There are 2 types of mpox – clade I and clade II. Clade I mpox may be the more serious type. It is spreading within parts of Africa. It is rarely seen outside of Africa.<\/p>\n “Most cases of mpox in Ireland have been clade II. The risk of catching mpox in Ireland is low.”<\/p>\n Mpox transmits via extremely close physical contact with someone who has the infection:<\/p>\n sexual contact or other intimate contact (such as kissing or cuddling)touching clothing, bedding or towels used by someone with the mpox rash or scabstouching mpox blisters or scabscoughs or sneezes of a person with mpox when they’re very close to you<\/p>\n The virus can also spread from animals to humans in areas where infected animals are found.<\/p>\n Initial Mpox symptoms<\/p>\n Symptoms typically emerge between five and 21 days following infection. Early indicators may include: A rash typically emerges between one and five days later and can appear anywhere on the body, including the mouth, hands, feet, genitals and around the anus.<\/p>\n Some individuals may also experience pain or bleeding from the anus.<\/p>\n The rash generally starts as raised spots before turning into fluid-filled blisters or sores, which ultimately scab over and clear up.<\/p>\n The majority of people recover within two to four weeks, though pregnant women, very young infants and those with severely compromised immune systems may experience a more serious illness.<\/p>\n Anyone who develops a rash that could be mpox, or who has been identified as a close contact of a confirmed case, should get in touch with their GP or a sexual health clinic.<\/p>\n Human Hands with Painful Rash, Red Spots Blisters on the Skin. Enterovirus. coxsackie. mpxv. vaccine(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n The HSE, however, advises people to ring ahead before visiting any healthcare facility so that staff can provide guidance on the safest way to prevent the spread of infection.<\/p>\n Most individuals with clade II mpox are able to recuperate at home and may need to self-isolate for between two and four weeks.<\/p>\n There is currently no cure for mpox, with treatment centred on alleviating symptoms.<\/p>\n The HSE also recommends vaccination for those considered to be at greater risk of infection, including gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men, sex workers and certain healthcare professionals.<\/p>\n Want to see more of the stories you love from Dublin Live?
