His movies tend to do very well at home, and his streaming shows have all been successful, but his theatrical films in the last five years — Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, In the Grey, and The Covenant — have all underperformed. But do you know which other director of Ritchie’s stature has had an even longer dry spell? Roland Emmerich. Once among the highest-grossing filmmakers in the world, Emmerich hasn’t had a hit movie since 2009 — that’s 17 years ago. His latest underperformer also happens to be the most expensive movie he has made since the 2009 blockbuster. And now, the movie in question is streaming on Prime Video, where audiences who didn’t get a chance to watch it in theaters can check it out.

With a reported budget of $150 million, the film also holds the distinction of being one of the most expensive independently produced titles of all time. Perhaps the only two other independent movies that are more expensive are Luc Besson‘s sci-fi bomb Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and the 2009 sci-fi reboot Terminator Salvation. Both movies cost around $200 million; both movies also underperformed. But none of them were as underwhelming, commercially speaking, as Emmerich’s movie. It was released in 2022, following a string of bombs going as far back as 2011.

Collider Exclusive · Sci-Fi Survival Quiz
Which Sci-Fi World Would You Survive?
The Matrix · Mad Max · Blade Runner · Dune · Star Wars

Five universes. The film revolves around a conspiracy theory that the moon is actually a massive, artificially constructed structure. It takes the conspiracy theories presented in Steven Spielberg‘s recent movie Disclosure Day and dials them up to 11. The movie didn’t make much of an impact at the box office, ending its worldwide run with just around $70 million. It also earned poor reviews, and is now sitting at a 35% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The site’s consensus reads, “Whether Moonfall is so bad it’s good or simply bad will depend on your tolerance for B-movie cheese — but either way, this is an Emmerich disaster thriller through and through.” Before Moonfall, Emmerich directed the conspiracy drama Anonymous, the action-comedy White House Down, the queer drama Stonewall, the sci-fi sequel Independence Day: Resurgence, the World War II movie Midway. Moonfall was released on Prime Video on July 1.
