{"id":533969,"date":"2026-07-05T09:25:13","date_gmt":"2026-07-05T09:25:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/533969\/"},"modified":"2026-07-05T09:25:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T09:25:13","slug":"cork-based-oncologist-urges-public-to-be-aware-of-skin-cancer-risks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/533969\/","title":{"rendered":"Cork-based oncologist urges public to be aware of skin cancer risks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">Advanced skin cancer kills about half of people affected within six months but using suncream and avoiding sun-beds can help reduce risk, a leading oncologist now working in Ireland has advised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Anna Olsson-Brown, the new professor of clinical trials at\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.echolive.ie\/corknews\/arid-41871615.html\">Cork University Hospital<\/a> and University College Cork, called on people to be aware of these risks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The risk increases for people with pale skin, she said, saying: \u201cEven if you never leave Ireland, you are still at significant risk of skin cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cThis is why we now recommend that everyone wears sunscreen if you\u2019re just going about your normal business. If it\u2019s particularly sunny, you can get sunburn so definitely wear suncream on sunny days but even if it\u2019s cloudy we recommend wearing SPF.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cThere\u2019s a very clear relationship between skin cancers and sunbeds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Prof Olsson-Brown supports stopping use of sunbeds here, saying: \u201cThey pose such an increased risk of melanoma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Get moles checked out<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">She urged people to have moles checked out: \u201cAbout 50% of people who get metastatic melanoma still go on to die of their melanoma so it is still a disease we want to prevent rather than try and treat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">However, advances in care have seen many patients benefit, she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cIf we think about 10 years ago, the average prognosis for someone with metastatic melanoma, when it had been inside of them and spread from the skin, was about six months from diagnosis to death,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cNow with the treatments we have, the immunotherapies, about 50% of people are living to 10 years and beyond. So it\u2019s very much improved. That means the other 50% aren\u2019t having that benefit.
