{"id":534193,"date":"2026-07-05T12:49:21","date_gmt":"2026-07-05T12:49:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/534193\/"},"modified":"2026-07-05T12:49:21","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T12:49:21","slug":"milky-way-spiral-arms-may-be-larger-than-previously-thought-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/534193\/","title":{"rendered":"Milky Way spiral arms may be larger than previously thought, study finds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\" class=\"speakable\">A <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_science_article_main-content_article-body_6_5425961\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/science\/air-and-space\/astronomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">team of astronomers<\/a> discovered that the spiral arms of the Milky Way galaxy may stretch farther out into space than was previously known.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\" class=\"speakable\">The scientists made precise distance measurements of dust clouds in the arms using data from two telescopes orbiting high above Earth&#8217;s atmosphere \u2014 <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_science_article_main-content_article-body_6_5425962\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/science\/air-and-space\/nasa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NASA&#8217;s Chandra<\/a>, the most powerful X-ray telescope ever built, and the European Space Agency&#8217;s XMM-Newton.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Researchers took advantage of rare, powerful gamma-ray bursts in distant galaxies. (NASA)<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_science_article_main-content_article-body_6_5425963\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/science\/nasa-announces-three-new-moon-missions-agency-races-build-permanent-lunar-base-end-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NASA ANNOUNCES THREE NEW MOON MISSIONS AS IT RACES TO BUILD LUNAR BASE BY YEAR&#8217;S END<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;This is a very direct way \u2014 relying only on geometry \u2014 to precisely measure distances to the Milky Way\u2019s spiral arms,&#8221; said Beatrice Vaia, the Italian Ph.D. student who led the study. &#8220;Most other methods rely on assumptions about how the Milky Way rotates, which become increasingly uncertain in the outer regions of our galaxy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The dust cloud in the most distant arm of the Milky Way was estimated to be about 3,500 light-years wide, according to the data the team collected.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Astronomers have been aware of the Milky Way&#8217;s arms for at least a century, but mapping them has always been difficult since <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_science_article_main-content_article-body_6_5425964\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/science\/planet-earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Earth<\/a> is positioned inside one of them.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/milky-way-death-valley.png\" alt=\"milky-way-death-valley\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>A view of the Milky Way Galaxy near Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes of Death Valley National Park in California on May 29, 2025.
