The Rebel roar resounded through Cedral St Conleth’s Park as Cork’s courageous teenage warriors came back from the dead to claim a sensational All-Ireland MFC triumph.

They trailed by nine points early in the second half, but an inspired performance reeled in champions Tyrone before they struck the killer blow late on in the form of an Eoghan Aherne goal.

The Red Hands appeared to be well on their way to retaining their title after dominating the first half, but it was the Munster lads who had all the energy, hunger and drive when it mattered most down the second-half straight.

With midfielder Kieran O’Shea and centre-back Conor Downing leading the charge, they dominated the Tyrone kick-out to lay on waves of attack which were turned into scores by Aherne, substitute Alex O’Herlihy and Tom Whooley as the Tyrone challenge wilted.

Cork started with a flourish as Joe Miskella’s two-pointer sent them 0-03 to 0-01 ahead, but once Charlie Meenan and Tomas Gallen began to assert themselves in midfield, the champions ran amok, hitting 0-09 without reply to establish a commanding lead.

Gallen, Brian Og McGuckin, Vincent Gormley, Matthew F Daly and Conan Canavan all hit the target for the Ulster champions as they ran at a hard-pressed Cork defence with pace from all angles.

And they almost had a goal when Ruairi O’Neill’s dipping shot came back off the crossbar.

Cork were restricted to sporadic raids, but they too were unlucky not to hit the net when Miskella smashed a shot against the bar.

Tyrone responded to that scare by hitting two-pointers through Gormley and Canavan to go nine clear, and the Munster champions had gone 16 minutes without a score when Eoghan Aherne converted a free.

Back came Tyrone again for Aodhan Corry to slot a 26th-minute penalty to the net, and while Cork were denied a goal by Ronan O’Neill’s save from Jacob Barry, they had a mountain to climb, trailing by 1-10 to 0-06 at the break.

Gormley was on fire in the Tyrone inside line, adding two more points to his tally as the nine points cushion was restored.

But Cork found a spark to burst into action with a flourish. Miskelly added a two-pointer, before substitute Alex O’Herlihy finished a loose ball to the net to leave just two between the teams with 42 minutes on the clock.

Aherne added a free, but Tyrone appeared to have steadied the ship when Brian Og McGuckin and Matthew F Daly landed scores to give them a two points lead going into the closing 10 minutes.

But Cork were not to be denied, and Aherne fired home a golden goal on 60 minutes as they broke from deep, and the holders were unable to get themselves back, with Whooley adding an insurance point in stoppage time.
