\n\tChristoper Nolan\u2019s \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d has finally been unveiled to members of the film press, who are calling the Oscar winner\u2019s adaptation of Homer\u2019s epic a \u201cstaggering achievement\u201d with \u201cflawless filmmaking.\u201d It appears Nolan has another huge hit on his hands.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cA filmmaking feast,\u201d wrote Collider\u2019s Peri Nemiroff. \u201cA grand and gripping rendition of Homer\u2019s epic, and one that feels uniquely Christopher Nolan<\/a>. It\u2019s sincerely hard to imagine any other filmmaker on the planet being able to bring that source material to screen with this much scale, scope and heart.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tDiscussing Film managing editor Andrew J. Salazar called the movie a \u201cstaggering achievement,\u201d while IndieWire\u2019s David Ehrlich noted \u201cthe last act rewards the journey\u201d despite some clunkiness along the way.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cFlawless filmmaking, every inch as epic as you\u2019d expect,\u201d film journalist Simon Thompson raved. \u201cLeading a stellar cast, Matt Damon<\/a> gives Odysseus everything in a career-best powerhouse performance. Robert Pattinson is outstanding as Antinous and John Leguizamo\u2019s Eumaeus is sublime.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tVariety\u2018s Jazz Tangcay hailed the movie as an \u201castonishing achievement\u201d and a \u201ctriumphant, spectacular epic,\u201d while the publication\u2019s awards pundit Clayton Davis noted: \u201cMatt Damon leads with grit, while Tom Holland<\/a> brings the sensitivity and heart\u2026 It\u2019s another hit for Nolan, one his die-hards will digest for decades to come.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tFandango\u2019s Erik Davis shared praise for Robert Pattinson, writing: \u201cHe\u2019s so conniving, manipulative and endlessly entertaining to watch. Pattinson leans all the way into the character\u2019s villainy, and it results in one of my favorite performances of his.\u201d He also called the movie \u201can absolute triumph and a crowning cinematic achievement from one of the great filmmakers of our time.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tMatt Damon headlines \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d in the lead role of Odysseus, as the movie recounts his harrowing years-long journey to return home to his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), and son, Telemachus (Tom Holland), after the end of the Trojan War. The sprawling ensemble cast also includes Zendaya, Lupita Nyong\u2019o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal and more.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cThe Odyssey\u201d is notably the first narrative feature film to be entirely shot with Imax cameras. Nolan previously revealed to\u00a0Empire magazine<\/a>\u00a0that he \u201cshot over 2 million feet of film\u201d during the making of \u201cThe Odyssey<\/a>,\u201d which filmed for 91 days last year.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cAs a filmmaker, you\u2019re looking for gaps in cinematic culture, things that haven\u2019t been done before,\u201d Nolan told Empire about why he chose to adapt Homer\u2019s Greek epic. \u201cAnd what I saw is that all of this great mythological cinematic work that I had grown up with \u2013 Ray Harryhausen movies and other things \u2013 I\u2019d never seen that done with the sort of weight and credibility that an A-budget and a big Hollywood, IMAX production could do.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cThe Odyssey\u201d opens in theaters July 17 from Universal Pictures.
