A new documentary ‘The Girl in the Water’ follows the family of Kelly Marie Lynch, as they seek answers around the circumstances of her death.<\/p>\n
The 23-year-old’s body was discovered near Horseshoe Bridge in Co Monaghan on St Patrick\u2019s Day 2024.<\/p>\n
The initial post-mortem report concluded that Ms Lynch had died by drowning.<\/p>\n
A desktop review by a second pathologist disagreed and said it was likely hypothermia.<\/p>\n
However, a further review from Dr Fintan Garavan – an Irish-trained pathologist who works in the United States – concluded it was neither of these things and that Ms Lynch had most likely died after a violent attack.<\/p>\n
Alan Bradley is the producer of the documentary, and he told Behind the Story how he came across her case.<\/p>\n
“I was scrolling on TikTok, and I came across her mother, Julianne Lynch, sharing this story about her daughter\u2026 she had all these questions about her daughter\u2019s death and didn\u2019t feel like she was getting any answers,” he said.<\/p>\n
“I thought it wasn\u2019t getting the attention it deserved.<\/p>\n
“As I looked into the case more, and I saw the questions the Lynch family had, I started to realise that this was a really important story \u2013 and it was one that deserved national attention.”<\/p>\n

Mr Bradley said one of the issues the Lynch family could not comprehend is her mobile phone.<\/p>\n
“Kelly\u2019s phone was found in her hand, and when [Kelly\u2019s family] asked the guards \u2018was the phone water-damaged?\u2019, they said \u2018no\u2019.<\/p>\n
“So, the idea that they\u2019re trying to get across is (that) Kelly\u2019s found with her phone in her hand, it\u2019s not water damaged, but there was enough water to cover her face so that she could drown.<\/p>\n
“They just couldn\u2019t understand how those two things would make sense.”<\/p>\n
\u2018They have no clarity\u2019<\/p>\n
Mr Bradley said the Lynch family feel like they are stuck “in limbo”.<\/p>\n
“They have no answers, Kelly\u2019s loss they\u2019ll always feel, but they can\u2019t even begin to grieve or mourn her because they\u2019re stuck.<\/p>\n
“They don\u2019t know what happened to her, they have no clarity.”<\/p>\n
Mr Bradley said he hopes the documentary will further raise Ms Lynch\u2019s case.<\/p>\n
\u2018The Girl in the Water\u2019 will air on Wednesday 8 July at 9.35pm on RT\u00c9 One and RT\u00c9 Player.<\/p>\n
