(WJAR) \u2014 The Atlantic Shark Institute shared a rare underwater video of a great white shark off Block Island.<\/p>\n
According to officials, the Atlantic Shark Institute Executive Director Jon Dodd and Mystic Aquarium\u2019s Sarah Callan were in the water searching for a male humpback whale carcass last week.<\/p>\n
The two spent a few hours searching a 50-square-mile area for the carcass.<\/p>\n
Officials said when they spotted the carcass, they also observed an 8-foot juvenile great white shark circling the whale.<\/p>\n

The organization shared a 20-second video of the shark.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe conditions were perfect, the seas were calm and the scene was like nothing I could have imagined,\u201d Callan said. \u201cIt was my first white shark I\u2019d ever seen and it was amazing to see in person.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Atlantic Shark Institute said this may be the first instance of a white shark being photographed in Rhode Island waters.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe size and vastness of the ocean can sometimes lead you to believe that you’re trying to find a needle in a haystack, but every once in a while everything aligns and you get the experience of a lifetime, and the video to prove it,\u201d Dodd said.<\/p>\n
