Interpol<\/a> are staring down the reality of AI on their atmospheric new single \u2018Iron City\u2019 \u2013 listen to it below.<\/p>\n

The track is the third to be taken from the New York band\u2019s forthcoming ninth album \u2018This Mirror Weighs A Ton<\/a>\u2019, which is set for release on August 28 via Partisan Records\u00a0\u2013 pre-order it\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Following\u00a0the Massive Attack-inspired title track<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0the single\u00a0\u2018See Out Loud<\/a>\u2019, \u2018Iron City\u2019 finds the band leaning into the tension between past and future that runs throughout the new record.<\/p>\n

Paul Banks\u2019 lyrics conjure recurring dreams and strolls through Central Park, with the track\u2019s recurring refrain of \u201cI can feel your love, iron city\u201d sitting alongside interlocking guitars, a propulsive rhythm section and atmospheric textures.<\/p>\n

Speaking to\u00a0NME\u00a0about the song<\/a>, Banks said: \u201cThat song is more a conversation between the human narrator and the future artificial intelligence\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0running things. Will this matriarchal tech be benevolent or angry? It switches between singing to it and it singing to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if he fears AI, Banks responded: \u201cNo. AI replacing art can only base itself on what\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0made, so without new stuff it will devolve into a\u00a0simulacra\u00a0and have no bearing on the human experience. We need to be\u00a0feeding it\u00a0new real stuff for it to be doing anything of real note.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s\u00a0always been shit art\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0purposefully formulaic, now\u00a0there will just be a computer trying to play the formula. When people get bored of the formula,\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0going to need a person to make the next leap and then the AI can mimic that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cIt\u2019ll\u00a0be human creativity\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0always ahead of the curve.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0the young artists\u2019 job to work in reaction to the status quo, so\u00a0they\u2019ll\u00a0always be breaking new ground that the computer\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0have the human side to make something that feels essential. In a military space is where\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0all a bit sketchier.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018This Mirror Weighs\u00a0A\u00a0Ton\u2019 was produced by\u00a0Andrew Wyatt [ROSAL\u00cdA<\/a>,\u00a0Charli XCX<\/a>] and mixed by Dave Fridmann [Sleater-Kinney<\/a>,\u00a0MGMT<\/a>], and\u00a0utilises\u00a0\u201cstrings, woodwinds, layered vocal harmonies, acoustic guitar and experimental sound design\u201d to their signature sense of atmosphere and inescapable rhythms.<\/p>\n

The album will also feature \u2018Wings\u00a0On\u00a0Fire\u2019,\u00a0which the band debuted live earlier this year<\/a>. Banks described that\u00a0track to\u00a0NME\u00a0as \u201ca fun romp\u201d,\u00a0adding: \u201cThat\u2019s the fulfilment of what we were aiming to do on this one, in being more rocking and raucous.\u201d<\/p>\n

Interpol signed to Partisan Records earlier this year<\/a>,\u00a0and they\u00a0will also return to the UK this summer for\u00a0a special appearance at All Points East x Outbreak in London on August 23<\/a>, supporting\u00a0Deftones<\/a>\u00a0on a bill that also includes\u00a0IDLES<\/a>,\u00a0Amyl & The Sniffers<\/a>\u00a0and others.<\/p>\n
