An Irish man has been sentenced to 14 years in high-security prison in Hungary for the murder of an American tourist.<\/p>\n
The 38-year-old Dubliner, who cannot be identified under Hungarian legal restrictions, admitted strangling 31-year-old Mackenzie Michalski, a nurse from Portland, Oregon, in November 2024.<\/p>\n
He had denied murder, insisting throughout the trial that she died accidentally during what he described as “consensual BDSM activity”.<\/p>\n
But the Metropolitan Court in Budapest rejected his claim that her death was the “result of an accident during consensual sex”.<\/p>\n
Based on the evidence, it found him guilty of intentional homicide after a trial that focused on forensic evidence, expert testimony and the defendant’s actions in the hours following Ms Michalski\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
A court-appointed forensic psychiatric evaluation identified disharmonious, impulsive and aggressive personality traits and severe psychopathology.<\/p>\n
According to prosecutors, the pair met in Budapest\u2019s popular nightlife district before returning to the man\u2019s rented apartment, where Ms Michalski died after being continuously strangled for at least two to three minutes.<\/p>\n
The prosecution argued there was no evidence that the victim had consented to being strangled and pointed to testimony that she had previously suffered a neck injury, making it unlikely she would have requested such acts.<\/p>\n
Medical experts also told the court that the injuries found during the post-mortem examination were inconsistent with the defence\u2019s account of an “accidental death”.<\/p>\n
After Ms Michalski died, the defendant did not call emergency services or attempt to alert authorities.<\/p>\n
Instead, prosecutors said he cleaned the apartment, bought a large suitcase, concealed the body inside it, then rented a car and drove to a wooded area near Szigliget by Lake Balaton to hide her remains.<\/p>\n
Investigators also presented evidence that the defendant searched online for information about whether wild boars eat human bodies, the smell of decomposing corpses, and how Hungarian police investigate missing persons.<\/p>\n
Police arrested him in Budapest the following day. He later led investigators to the location where Ms Michalski’s body had been hidden.<\/p>\n
The trial also heard that officers recovered videos from the defendant\u2019s phone showing the victim\u2019s tied and lifeless body after her death. Police also seized a concealed camera disguised as a pen, which contained footage of the defendant approaching numerous women in Budapest.<\/p>\n
During his final statement to the court on Tuesday, the defendant broke down in tears as he apologised to Ms Michalski\u2019s family.<\/p>\n
The court, however, rejected his account and accepted the prosecution\u2019s argument that the evidence supported a conviction for murder.<\/p>\n
Ms Michalski\u2019s parents travelled from Oregon to attend the proceedings.<\/p>\n
Her mother described the past 20 months as traumatic and said the family had been forced to endure repeated attacks on their daughter\u2019s character because of the defence\u2019s claim that she had requested violent sexual activity.<\/p>\n
She told the court that her daughter had dreamed of getting married and starting a family but would never have that opportunity.<\/p>\n
The defence had argued there was no motive for murder and maintained that the defendant panicked after Ms Michalski died, claiming his subsequent attempts to dispose of the body were evidence of fear rather than intent to kill.<\/p>\n
The court rejected that argument and imposed a custodial sentence of 14 years.<\/p>\n
The defendant is also sentenced to 20 years\u2019 expulsion from Hungary, and is not eligible for parole.<\/p>\n
The defence has filed a full appeal against the verdict, arguing that the court’s legal findings were flawed and unlawful. It has requested a reduced sentence and a full appellate review of the judgment.<\/p>\n
Following the ruling, defence lawyer Gy\u00f6rgy Magyar asked the court to place his client under house arrest while the appeal is pending.
