West Indies are ranked ninth in Women’s ODI cricket, while Ireland are 10th.

Ireland hosted the West Indies in a T20 Tri-Series just prior to the T20 World Cup – the two sides met twice, each side winning one apiece.

They also met at the recent T20 World Cup in Bristol with Ireland prevailing by six wickets.

“Obviously delighted with the last game, nice to finally get a win (against the West Indies)”, Irish captain Gaby Lewis told RTÉ Sport.

“But we have to put that behind us now and the three 50-overs games against the ‘Windies’ is a huge series for us, and obviously starting a new championship series.

“The top eight go through to the World Cup and that’s something that we’re looking to push for.

“We’ve been probably more successful in the T20 format, but I think that’s something that we want to convert and it’s just about doing our skills for longer periods.

“We’re a young bowling attack, as obviously our whole team is. But I think the experience that they had at the World Cup and the confidence that they can take from that, bowling at some of the best in the world, I think they can take massive confidence in that leading into this ODI series.

“It’s a game of confidence and going in showcasing our skills, being aggressive, I think that’s something that we’re going to bring into this ODI series.

“We had a long stint of cricket with the Tri series and then going straight to the (T20) World Cup, so it was important for us as a squad to take some time off.

“Then it was back into training.”

Ireland will face India, New Zealand and Pakistan in their other home tests, with away series’ against England, Australia, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka to come.

For captain Lewis, it’s about refreshing and tackling the new tournament head on.

“We’re not going to be turning into completely different players overnight”, she explained.

“I think it’s just about a mindset shift in terms of that change of format.

“It’s all a case of who steps up on the day really, (but) we have confidence in our skills. It’s just about applying them on the day and just being switched on.

“It’s going to feel probably longer than a usual 50-over match might be because we’ve played so many T20s, but I think it’s just about that mental switch.

“That’s the big one for me”.

The Irish squad has sustained several injuries with Laura Delany, Arlene Kelly and Ava Canning all unavailable due to injury.

Ireland Women’s squad:

Gaby Lewis (capt), Christina Coulter Reilly, Alana Dalzell, Georgina Dempsey, Sarah Forbes, Amy Hunter, Louise Little, Aimee Maguire, Jane Maguire, Kia McCartney, Cara Murray, Leah Paul, Orla Prendergast (vc), Rebecca Stokell.

Match series:

10 July: Ireland v West Indies – 1st ODI (Bready; starts 10.45am)

12 July: Ireland v West Indies – 2nd ODI (Bready; starts 10.45am)

15 July: Ireland v West Indies – 3rd ODI (Bready; starts 10.45am)

The Ireland cricket team returns to action following their appearance at the recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup…

[2
61,60,43
post-541203","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-news
["GET
