Where were you the first time you heard the Rocky<\/a> theme song? <\/p>\n

I was on the floor of my basement. It was family movie night, and I was about to have my mind blown. <\/p>\n

Rocky is an awesome movie, but what if I told you we could use it to go over a screenwriting tool that can help you write the best version of your own script?<\/p>\n

How can we do this? In part by analyzing the story beats using our STORY MAP<\/a>. <\/p>\n

We\u2019ll dissect the scenes that make us cheer, endear us to the characters, and a few of the ones that maybe don\u2019t hold up quite as well.<\/p>\n

So, without further ado…let\u2019s talk about Rocky! <\/p>\n

The Rocky Script <\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve ever stared at a blank screen with a negative bank account balance, the story of Rocky probably resonates with you. <\/p>\n

In 1975, Sylvester Stallone was a 29-year-old actor with nothing in the bank, a pregnant wife, and a resume consisting mostly of background extra work. <\/p>\n

Stallone was desperate for an acting job, but no one would give him any roles. So he wrote one for himself. <\/p>\n

Inspiration struck as Stallone watched a heavyweight championship fight between Muhammad Ali and a total underdog named Chuck Wepner. Wepner wasn’t supposed to last two rounds, but he went a grueling 15 rounds with the greatest of all time.<\/p>\n

That gave Stallone an idea…and a role he knew he was born to play. <\/p>\n

Stallone went back to his dingy apartment and just wrote. He churned out the first draft of Rocky in a week. It wasn’t perfect, but he knew he could keep at it and make it better. <\/p>\n

The $360,000 Gamble<\/p>\n

The script landed on the desks of producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff. They loved it and offered to buy it, but Stallone had one non-negotiable condition: He had to play Rocky Balboa.<\/p>\n

The executives wanted a proven star like Robert Redford or Burt Reynolds, not a nobody. So they offered him $360,000 for the movie. <\/p>\n

This was so much money to Stallone…but not his dream. <\/p>\n

So Stallone drew a hard line. <\/p>\n

The producers compromised with the studio. Stallone could star, but the budget was capped at a meager $1 million.<\/p>\n

Director John G. Avildsen shot the film in just 28 days. Because they couldn\u2019t afford extras for the ice-skating scene, they changed the script on the fly to make it an “after-hours” date. Every budget constraint forced a creative triumph.<\/p>\n

The Big Win<\/p>\n

Rocky went on to gross over $225 million worldwide, won Best Picture, and launched a multi-billion-dollar franchise.<\/p>\n

But the real lesson isn’t the box office; it\u2019s the hustle. Stallone didn’t wait for permission to be a writer, and he didn’t wait for permission to be a star. He bet on his voice<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The next time you want to quit because the market is tough, remember: you\u2019re only one manic writing binge away from changing your life. Now get back on the keys.<\/p>\n

And now, we analyze the movie with our story map. <\/p>\n

So, What\u2019s A Story Map?<\/p>\n

When I think about screenplays, I think about all the beats you hit to take your audience from the opening scene<\/a> to the closing credits. <\/p>\n

Sure, some people swear by Blake Snyder<\/a>, but I prefer to think of the screenplay more as a map than as certain building blocks. <\/p>\n

It takes the pressure of page goals and formulaic outlines. Just tell me a great story! <\/p>\n

And use these beat ideas to brainstorm. <\/p>\n

There are twists and turns, but no matter what, you\u2019re trying to get to that ending payoff.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the way I see our Story Map: <\/p>\n

Unraveling The Map – Do you have an opening scene that defines the movie? The Launch Point – Where are we, and who are we with?The First Leg – What\u2019s a normal day look like in this world? Change Course – What sets our characters off on their journey from normalcy? The Foot of the Mountain – Okay, we\u2019re going on this journey together Climbing The Side – It starts hard, but you get used to the problems as you goThrough The Cave – Do you have a B story? Set that story off on its own now too.Reassess the Problem – You\u2019re at the middle. Is there another way to get it done?Try and Fail – Things begin to fall apart, can they handle it? The Fall – The worst thing happens, something so bad you don\u2019t think you can get up.The Hidden Clue – What do your characters discover about themselves\/the problem that they never saw before? Race To the Finish – They\u2019re up and running no matter what. The Treasure Chest – Did they get what they came for? Where We Go From Here – Show us the world in a new light, hint what\u2019s next. <\/p>\n

I created this story map to help myself when I\u2019m outlining new ideas (maybe some from the Public Domain<\/a>) and working on film treatments<\/a>. <\/p>\n

But now, let\u2019s take the original Rocky script and see how it fits inside this Story Map. <\/p>\n

\n

The Rocky Story Map <\/p>\n

I love Rocky as much as the next person from the Philadelphia area (shout out, West Chester<\/a>!), but the movie is great even if you\u2019re from a lesser part of the world. <\/p>\n

Now that I have my hometown banter out of the way, let\u2019s get into what makes Rocky a great film by examining the Story Map. <\/p>\n

Unraveling The Map – What do we get at the beginning of Rocky? A pullback from a picture of Jesus to reveal that we\u2019re in the Resurrection Boxing Club. Look, this isn\u2019t subtle, but it\u2019s a great way to let us know this story is about a fighter, and hint at what this story might be about. <\/p>\n

\n

The Launch Point – We\u2019re following Rocky, a down-on-his-luck boxer who gets booed by the people watching him fight. Not a single person there respects him, and we quickly learn that he\u2019s a guy who was never thought to be good enough to go pro. <\/p>\n

Burgess Meredith said it best, Rocky is a bum! <\/p>\n

\n

But Rocky wants something more…if only he had a shot… <\/p>\n

The First Leg – Rocky has a crappy apartment and works an even crappier job as an enforcer for the mafia. If you don\u2019t pay, he\u2019s supposed to break your thumbs. Or worse. But Rocky doesn\u2019t break anyone\u2019s thumbs. <\/p>\n

We learn that he\u2019s TOO NICE to be a great enforcer. And that makes us love him. To underline Rocky\u2019s desire to be someone, we have him stare at a picture of his younger self. He used to be a kid with dreams. What happened?<\/p>\n

We meet Adrian and her brother, Paulie. We see Rocky flirt and fall for her. We also see that Adrian can\u2019t stand up to her brother. She and Rocky have similar arcs, both need to become the person they\u2019re meant to be. <\/p>\n

\n

And we see Rocky going about his business. And get stiffed. And get yelled at. And get made fun of. And get spurned by women, children, and men. <\/p>\n

The crazy thing about Rocky, and why I prefer the Story Map to a Beat Sheet<\/a>, is that these first couple of headings take place over the movie\u2019s first hour. <\/p>\n

We spend a lot of time developing the characters, the stakes, and the story. <\/p>\n

When you\u2019re writing, I don\u2019t want you to get bogged down by what happens by which page. Just focus on whether or not you\u2019re creating a compelling story. <\/p>\n

Sort the rest out later. <\/p>\n

Change Course – We watch movies because we want to see people break out of their day-to-day and reach for the stars. This is a movie about a guy needing a shot, and this one actually comes a bit passively. <\/p>\n

We learn, via Apollo Creed\u2019s storyline, that his opponent hurt his hand sparring and has to drop out. Apollo needs to pick a new fighter for an exhibition. (Want more Apollo Creed? Apollo goes through lots of ideas but settles on one guy. <\/p>\n

That guy happens to be Rocky Balboa. <\/p>\n

And so, the course of Rocky\u2019s life begins to change. <\/p>\n

\n

The Foot of the Mountain – So, fighting Apollo is Rocky\u2019s mountain. We\u2019re not at the training montage<\/a> yet, but we\u2019re getting there. First, Rocky needs to get Mick to be his trainer. Rocky stops working for the mafia and starts getting serious. <\/p>\n

He confesses to Adrian that he\u2019s afraid he won\u2019t win, but he knows he\u2019s gotta try. <\/p>\n

Climbing The Side – So if Rocky wants to get up the mountain, he\u2019s got to climb. The middle of the movie intercuts Apollo\u2019s antics with Rocky\u2019s work. <\/p>\n

Apollo is loud, formidable, and a true showman. <\/p>\n

Rocky sounds barely educated, and even though he\u2019s chiseled, he comes across as meek. <\/p>\n

This will be a steep climb. But each man has respect for the others. <\/p>\n

Rocky is not climbing alone. He\u2019s got Adrian, who agrees to go out on a date with him. So he takes her ice skating. <\/p>\n

\n

Then there is a problematic scene at Rocky\u2019s apartment after the date, where Rocky won\u2019t let Adrian leave, and sort of forces her to kiss him. <\/p>\n

That might have flown in the 1970\u2019s, but not today. It undercuts what should be a very tender scene, where the two talk about emotions first. <\/p>\n

Anyway, the climb scenes balance tenderness with the tension of the impending fight. It makes us love the characters and gets us invested not only in Rocky\u2019s life but also in his success. And it pays off everything we got in the first hour. <\/p>\n

Through The Cave – So the official B-plot and romance with Adrian happens around twenty minutes in, but the date and kiss really solidify it. <\/p>\n

The cool thing about this movie is that we know from the get-go that it sets up the two B stories perfectly. <\/p>\n

We already talked about following Apollo and his camp. Apollo is a winner. <\/p>\n

But the other B-plot is about two losers. Adrian thinks she\u2019s a loser because she\u2019s single and runs a pet store. Rocky thinks he\u2019s a washed-up loser. They\u2019re both people who need more from life and have to stand up to their respective bullies. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s kind of beautiful. <\/p>\n

Reassess the Problem – Earlier in the movie, Rocky doesn\u2019t believe in himself enough to fight Apollo, but once he accepts the battle, he has to start thinking better of himself. <\/p>\n

The first change starts small. I think it\u2019s when he walks the girl home from the gang and gives her the speech about wanting more. <\/p>\n

\n

So then Rocky does something different. He starts to train better. <\/p>\n

He\u2019s eating raw eggs, he\u2019s running the streets. <\/p>\n

He\u2019s not a loser or a bum; he\u2019s punching raw meat. <\/p>\n

Even Mickey sees the change in Rocky. Even if Rocky can\u2019t see it yet. <\/p>\n

\n

So Micky encourages him to train even harder. And we get the greatest montage in movie history. <\/p>\n

\n

Try and Fail – Look. This is a story about a boxer. And in boxing, you have to take your licks. And Rocky\u2019s licks are both physical and emotional. <\/p>\n

Even with all his training, and even with his luck in his romance, and Adrian standing up to her brother, and all the inspirational things, Rocky still doesn\u2019t think he belongs. <\/p>\n

\n

When Rocky enters the arena in Philly and sees that he FINALLY has a shot at the big time…he doesn\u2019t think he deserves it.<\/p>\n

Part of this is because his caricature is wearing the wrong color shorts, and part of it is because he\u2019s been a nobody his whole life. <\/p>\n

Rocky needs a training montage for his heart. <\/p>\n

The Fall – When Rocky gets home, he confesses that he doesn\u2019t think he can beat Apollo, and he doesn\u2019t think he can even go the distance. I mean, no one else has ever done that…But Adrian believes in Rocky.<\/p>\n

He just has to give himself a chance to go the distance\u2026<\/p>\n

\n

The Hidden Clue – When Rocky gets in the ring with Apollo, he\u2019s immediately booed, and taken for granted.<\/p>\n

But this movie isn\u2019t about other people appreciating Rocky, it\u2019s about Rocky digging deep and understanding that he\u2019s gotta EARN that love. <\/p>\n

So what does Rocky do? <\/p>\n

He knocks Apollo Creed to the ground. <\/p>\n

\n

And then something crazy happens. The crowd inside the stadium. And the crowd in bars around the city. And the crowd watching at home. All unite behind Philadelphia\u2019s own son. <\/p>\n

Because those people start believing in themselves, too. <\/p>\n

Race To the Finish – The fight between Rocky and Apollo goes multiple rounds. We see Rocky get ahead, Apollo gets ahead, and everyone starts rooting for Rocky. <\/p>\n

We also get Apollo learning to respect Rocky in the ring. This isn\u2019t going to be a \u201cgimme,\u201d he\u2019s going to have to try to beat the Italian Stallion. <\/p>\n

The Treasure Chest – the fight culminates in the 14th round. Blood all over the place. Two warriors are staggering, but Rocky is determined to go the distance. <\/p>\n

Lucky for him, Adrian makes her way down to the Spectrum to cheer him on. <\/p>\n

Rocky gets clocked and lies on the mat. This should be it, but we know he wanted to last the fight, so even despite Mick urging him to \u201cstay down,\u201d Rocky rises triumphantly and battles until the bell rings. <\/p>\n

He\u2019s no bum now! <\/p>\n

\n

Where We Go From Here – Rocky gets out of the ring and runs to Adrian. It\u2019s their love that\u2019s the real story of this movie, and the love they\u2019ve found through self-worth. Honestly, this movie is all about getting mentally healthy. That\u2019s progressive. <\/p>\n

Sure, Apollo wins via split decision, but Rocky doesn\u2019t even look back or care. <\/p>\n

He knows he gave it his all and lived up to his potential. That\u2019s all that matters\u2026<\/p>\n

Plus, the next six movies coming our way\u2026<\/p>\n

Summing Up The Rocky Story Map <\/p>\n

Now that you know how to map your story, you’d better hit the ground running. Use that tool for all of your screenwriting needs, but remember, all writing is rewriting<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rocky is a crazy script. It has a long first act, a short middle, and a short ending. Consider that a young Sylvester Stallone wrote it in THREE DAYS! At least, that’s what he’s said… <\/p>\n

The character of Rocky Balboa is part of the cultural lexicon forever. So much of that has to do with the inspiration, but also the execution of the idea through tight story beats. <\/p>\n

As I said earlier, there are no rules. If you can entertain people, you\u2019ll win inside and outside of the ring. And certainly in Hollywood. <\/p>\n

Now get out there and get writing!<\/p>\n
