\nMarcus O’Neill has denied the murder of Gillian Curran<\/p>\n
The Central Criminal Court in Waterford has been told of the significant injuries received by Tramore woman Gillian Curran at the home of her partner last year.<\/p>\n
The 47-year-old, originally from Sweetbriar in Tramore, Co Waterford, was found in an unresponsive state by emergency services and garda\u00ed after they entered the home of her partner on O’Brien Street at 10am on Saturday, 25 January 2025.<\/p>\n
She was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.<\/p>\n

This morning, Dr Paul Campbell described having been called to the house in O’Brien Street where he found Ms Curran lying on a sofa. He said that when he arrived, he found a heart monitor attached to her.<\/p>\n
Dr Campbell told the court he found Ms Curran in an unresponsive condition with no sign of electric activity in her heart.<\/p>\n
He said he found her with injuries to both her face and body, while he also found large tissue swelling around her eyes.<\/p>\n
Dr Campbell also said that he found a 4cm laceration above her right eye, along with palpable bruises on her face. She also had, on examination, what felt like rib fractures.<\/p>\n
Paramedic William Byrne said himself and his colleague John Wilson arrived at the house in O’Brien Street having received a call.<\/p>\n
On arrival Marus O’Neill opened the front door, while on entry they applied an ECG which is a cardiograph, but there was no pulse.<\/p>\n
The other paramedic, John Wilson, said on arrival at the house they observed a female on the couch. Garda\u00ed were called at that time while the woman was unresponsive.<\/p>\n
CCTV footage<\/p>\n
The court heard that garda\u00ed analysed CCTV footage from multiple cameras around the area of O’Brien Street, along with the adjoining streets and retail outlets covering the relevant parties in the murder trial which were shown to the judge and jury.<\/p>\n
Garda\u00ed described the harvesting and analysis of CCTV from multiple cameras surrounding the O’Brien Street area on 24 January 2025.<\/p>\n
The footage included video of the deceased and the accused walking in various locations throughout the evening of 24 January 2025. The footage also included video of the deceased along with the accused walking in different locations.<\/p>\n
It also showed the accused and the deceased return to the house in O’Brien Street, while the following morning video footage showed the ambulance arrival at the house.<\/p>\n
The opening of the trial was told a man accused of the murder of his partner told emergency services the couple had been drinking the night before and she had fallen several times before falling down the stairs where he found her the following morning.<\/p>\n

The jury was played a recording of a 999 call that Mr O’Neill made on 25 January 2025, at 9.56am in which he explained what had happened.<\/p>\n
He told paramedics that Ms Curran had fallen a few times and hit her head and her chin.<\/p>\n
“I can hear the heart pulse, her heartbeat, she’s not breathing. Her breathing is very low,” he said on the call.<\/p>\n
“She’s not awake, she doesn’t appear to be conscious, but she has a heart rate, her breathing is very low and her temperature is quite high. Her breathing is not normal.”<\/p>\n
Opening the trial, Prosecuting Counsel, Conor O’Doherty, SC, said the issue for the jury would be whether the injuries sustained by Ms Curran occurred by accident, as outlined by Mr O’Neill to garda\u00ed, or whether they were the result of a violent assault, as the State contended.<\/p>\n
He said that Mr O’Neill was in a relationship with Ms Curran, who had struggled throughout her life with alcohol addiction.<\/p>\n
While she was not living with Mr O’Neill at his home on O’Brien Street, she stayed there occasionally, as was the case of 24 January 2025.<\/p>\n
