Mare of Easttown may have seemed like a one-and-done limited series when it premiered in 2021, but the acclaimed crime drama is coming back – albeit in a completely unexpected way!<\/p>\n

As per Variety<\/a>, Julianne Nicholson will reprise her role as Lori Ross, though it won’t come in the form of a spin-off. The actor, who won a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance, will actually be appearing as the character in the second season<\/a> of Task.<\/p>\n

Both Task<\/a> and Mare of Easttown are written and created by Brad Ingelsby, with it being confirmed that each series is set in a shared universe. It’s currently unclear how Nicholson’s Lori will factor in the storyline, but we’ll have details soon.<\/p>\n

Task centres on Mark Ruffalo’s Tom Brandis, a Philadelphia-based FBI agent who had a past as a Catholic priest. In his role in law enforcement, he is put in charge of an investigative unit which focuses on a string of violent robberies in the local area.<\/p>\n

Though we don’t know how Lori will come into play, we do have a logline for the second season of Task, which reads: “Tom Brandis takes the helm of a new task force, but the deeper the operation runs, the harder it is to tell who’s the target.”<\/p>\n

In addition to Ruffalo and Nicholson, the cast for the highly-anticipated second season includes two-time Academy Award-winner Mahershala Ali, Harry Melling, Adam Nagaitis, Aminah Nieves and \u00c9dgar Ramirez. <\/p>\n

The procedural crime drama<\/a> was acclaimed upon its release, with Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> currently reporting a near-perfect approval rating of 96% from 83 reviews. The audience score, meanwhile, is a bit lower at 77%.<\/p>\n

“You’ve seen this kind of show before, probably many times \u2013 but Task’s compelling characters, patient writing and undercurrent of emotion help it stand out from the crowd,” noted Empire Magazine<\/a>, while IndieWire<\/a> called it “engrossing”.<\/p>\n

Mare of Easttown was similarly lauded, with it having a score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>. In addition to Nicholson, Kate Winslet and Evan Peters both won Primetime Emmy Awards, while Jean Smart was also nominated.<\/p>\n

The crime drama centres on Marianne “Mare” Sheehan (Winslet), a detective sergeant who is celebrated as a local hero. She is tasked with investigating the recent murder of a teenage mother, while being haunted about the unsolved disappearance of a young girl.<\/p>\n

Task airs on Sky Atlantic and streams on NOW in the UK, while Mare of Easttown is streaming on HBO Max.<\/p>\n
