{"id":545666,"date":"2026-07-12T09:09:25","date_gmt":"2026-07-12T09:09:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/545666\/"},"modified":"2026-07-12T09:09:25","modified_gmt":"2026-07-12T09:09:25","slug":"irish-manufacturing-production-slumps-after-frantic-start-last-year-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/545666\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish manufacturing production slumps after frantic start last year \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish industrial production continued to decline between March and May amid an ongoing slump after companies ramped up activity levels last year in a rush to get in advance of new<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us-tariffs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us-tariffs\/\"> US tariffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Production fell by 1.4 per cent over the three months to the end of May compared to the previous three months, new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-statistics-office\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-statistics-office\/\">Central Statistics Office (CSO)<\/a> data reveals, and was down 16.4 per cent from the same period in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The decline was particularly acute in the highly globalised \u201cmodern\u201d manufacturing sector, according to the data. Production in this sector, which includes pharmaceutical companies and other multinational-dominated industries, fell by 22.7 per cent in the 12 months to the end of May. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, production levels are falling from high levels in the first half of last year, as multinationals rushed to produce and export goods from Ireland to the US amid fears <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\">US president Donald Trump<\/a> would impose sweeping tariffs on imports to the US from Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, industrial turnover \u2013 a measure of the value of goods produced by manufacturing businesses \u2013 was up 5.8 per cent between March and May but down 23.4 per cent on an annual basis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The figures cover manufacturing activities undertaken by companies headquartered in Ireland, the CSO said.
