RT\u00c9 presenter Miriam O\u2019Callaghan has said she is considering launching a second legal challenge against Facebook over fake images of her on the social media site.<\/p>\n

In 2022, the mum-of-eight received an apology from the social media giant over fake skincare ads using her image were posted on the site. Now, new AI-generated images of her have appeared again online.<\/p>\n

Miriam<\/a> said: ‘When you see a picture like that, where you\u2019re looking like you\u2019re being arrested because you\u2019ve done something wrong, it makes you think, oh my goodness, how can that be up online?<\/p>\n

‘It does remind me, a couple of years back, when I did take a case against Facebook, there were a lot of images like that of me being dragged out of studios. It does give you a fright.<\/p>\n

‘In that picture, I looked like I\u2019d been seriously beaten up.<\/p>\n

‘You just wonder the mindset of the person who decides this is the correct clickbait, to do that to my face.<\/p>\n

‘We had to find out, when I took a case against Facebook, who was behind those posts. And my wonderful lawyer [Paul Tweed] went and found out they were [people in] eastern European countries who mocked these up.<\/p>\n

‘They\u2019re incredibly experienced at doing this now. They\u2019re huge companies who do this. They take the image of someone very well known in their own country and they mock it up like that. But this is a different level, because of the bruising and the blood.’<\/p>\n

Asked if she would pursue legal action, the Prime Time host confirmed to the Sunday Independent: ‘I haven\u2019t decided, but I\u2019m not going to sit idly by and let them continue, because once you allow it they multiply and multiply. <\/p>\n

‘They decide, oh, this person is worth doing this to because we\u2019re getting a lot of clicks, and then it spreads like wildfire.<\/p>\n

‘In the early days when these went up, I assumed people would assume they\u2019re not real. And I now realise some people do think they\u2019re real.<\/p>\n

‘I\u2019m going to watch this situation, as they say. I\u2019ve no option now but to get back on to Facebook and X.’<\/p>\n

In 2022, Miriam received an ‘unreserved apology’<\/a> from Facebook, now known as Meta Platforms Ireland, over the fake adverts.<\/p>\n

Included in the settlement agreement, Meta Platforms Ireland agreed to establish an additional scam ad reporting tool which will allow Irish users to report more details on misleading adverts to a specialist team within Facebook for review.<\/p>\n
