It has been continually said about England that they would step up their performance levels as the World Cup has gone on, something we have yet to see come to fruition despite them having reached the semi-finals.<\/p>\n

It is a narrative that is already being spun once again ahead of the game against Argentina, something Roy Keane was quick to call out.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Stick to Football<\/a>, Ian Wright suggested that England would step up their game to beat Argentina in the semi-finals. The Irishman responded by hinting that England have gotten away with it by not coming up against top level opposition in this tournament.<\/p>\n

Wright: I don’t fear Argentina like I’d fear France or Spain. I think Argentina, there is a lot of fallacies with them I think we can exploit.<\/p>\n

Keane: Yeah but the emotional side of it Wrighty, it’s the whole package. We look at technical stuff, but it’s what goes into winning a game of football. It’s the guys off the bench, referee’s decisions, momentum, getting away with a mistake…<\/p>\n

When England had their bad little spell today and gave away that chance, France, Spain, or Argentina are punishing you there without a doubt. Norway and these other teams let you off the hook. This is a big step up…<\/p>\n

I’ve said it all along (that it will be France v Argentina in the final). I’m sticking with that.<\/p>\n

Wright: Is that because you don’t want us there?<\/p>\n

Keane: I’ve said it all along. The last few weeks I’ve said that England will win today (against Norway), I thought they would beat Mexico. I just think they will come up a bit short in the next round.<\/p>\n

Wright: Watching Argentina and the way they play, I think we can beat them.<\/p>\n

Keane: Do you think Argentina are better than Norway?<\/p>\n

Wright: Without a doubt. I just think it’s the type of game we can step up and maybe get something…<\/p>\n

Keane: So you think you’ll beat Argentina?<\/p>\n

Wright: I think we will beat them. They way they play and how narrow they are, I think we will be able to block them and break them. But the wingers are going to have to do a lot more than they have done.<\/p>\n

England and Argentina set for intriguing World Cup showdown<\/p>\n

As much as England may be able to exploit weaknesses in the Argentina team, the South Americans will no doubt have a similar view of Thomas Tuchel’s side. They looked vulnerable at the back once again in the game against Norway and likely would have been punished more harshly by a higher level of opposition.<\/p>\n
