\u201cI never saw them; they come from behind,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t remember if they said anything, but they hit me with metal or a hammer in the chin and four times in the jaw and the face.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 24-year-old immediately lost consciousness.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cI woke up in hospital, and I didn\u2019t know what happened. I was shocked when I saw my injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n
His upper and lower jaws were fractured. His nose was broken. Three and a half of his front teeth were smashed in.<\/p>\n
Videos and photographs show the scale of the swelling and injuries.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe doctor said some nerves are not working well. They may recover, but may not,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The attack happened on June 26. Some 10 days after, Hussein still couldn\u2019t talk when contacted by the Irish Examiner.<\/p>\n
All communication was by text, which continued over the week. He has to take his food orally by syringe.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is hard, but it is the only way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Though Hussein cannot remember details of his attack, he believes the perpetrators were Irish.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, they were Irish, but I had nothing to do with them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\n I really like this country, but I can\u2019t explain why I was attacked. They did not take my phone or money.\n <\/p>\n
Garda\u00ed at Mountjoy Garda Station are investigating.<\/p>\n
Hussein endures significant pain.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am in pain every day; I use so many painkillers. I can\u2019t talk or sleep on my sides,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Hussein arrived in Ireland in February 2024, fleeing the civil war in his country involving the Islamist terrorist group al-Shabaab and the government.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy father and family are fighting the government, and they are al-Shabaab supporters because our region was always controlled by them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t want to fight or die. I lost a brother in the fight.\u201d <\/p>\n
He was homeless until last September, when he got a place in an International Protection Accommodation Services (Ipas) centre.<\/p>\n
On June 10, he became homeless again and slept in a tent in a Dublin park.<\/p>\n
Hussein is most worried about where he will go after he is discharged in about five weeks.<\/p>\n
Thanks to Liam Hourican, who approached him in St James\u2019s Hospital, Hussein has received physical support and, through a fundraiser on iDonate, some \u20ac6,000 so far in aid.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat Sunday, I was in the emergency department with my fianc\u00e9e,\u201d Liam said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI spotted a young man two beds down with terrible injuries to his face. I went down to him to see if he needed anything.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
Another volunteer friend visited, and together they set up the fundraiser.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople visit me and stand with me. This helps me forget the pain,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
