{"id":547612,"date":"2026-07-13T15:23:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T15:23:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/547612\/"},"modified":"2026-07-13T15:23:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T15:23:17","slug":"irish-singer-moves-to-spain-because-of-stigma-of-renting-in-ireland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/547612\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish singer moves to Spain because of &#8216;stigma&#8217; of renting in Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Irish tenor has said he and his wife have moved to Spain because there is a lingering stigma about renting in Ireland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Paul Byrom and his wife Catherine have been visiting Spain for years and decided they wanted to make the move permanent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/shows\/lunchtime-live-234859\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lunchtime Live<\/a>, Mr Byrom described himself as a \u201cproud Dub\u201d who loves Ireland, but added that Spain offers a better quality of life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time we&#8217;re down here, I suppose that there&#8217;s a number of things that kind of stick out,\u201d he explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou notice the cost of things are just a hell of a lot cheaper than back home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s always kind of half-hearted to say, \u2018God, why aren&#8217;t we living here?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we kind of laugh it off and then move on; then the laugh started getting shorter and shorter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2274721\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ae81a40e-99cd-4f54-82f8-65afd853672d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"1280\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The couple have no children and Mr Byrom\u2019s work involves touring the globe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It means they have the freedom to live anywhere they want &#8211; provided the have the right to residency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere I&#8217;m actually based isn&#8217;t necessarily an issue for me,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Catherine got a job opportunity which allowed her to work remotely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it was one of these sliding door moments where we&#8217;re like, \u2018Okay, it&#8217;s either now or never.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1767679\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2XK42WB.jpg\" alt=\"Main image shows the beachfront in the town of Nerja on Spain\u2019s Costa Del Sol\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1440\"\/> The beachfront in the town of Nerja on Spain\u2019s Costa Del Sol.
