{"id":547940,"date":"2026-07-13T19:31:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T19:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/547940\/"},"modified":"2026-07-13T19:31:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T19:31:08","slug":"digger-tom-cruise-is-unrecognisable-in-this-new-climate-disaster-comedy-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/547940\/","title":{"rendered":"Digger: Tom Cruise is unrecognisable in this new climate disaster comedy \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The first trailer for Alejandro G I\u00f1\u00e1rritu\u2019s Digger, described as \u201ca comedy of catastrophic proportions\u201d, has been released by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/warner-bros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/warner-bros\">Warner Bros<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">I\u00f1\u00e1rritu\u2019s first English-language movie since The Revenant sees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tom-cruise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tom-cruise\">Tom Cruise<\/a> (64) star as Digger Rockwell, an eccentric oil billionaire and the \u201cmost powerful man in the world\u201d who embarks on a chaotic mission to prove that he is humanity\u2019s saviour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the trailer it seems the world is heading towards an ecological disaster (a melting iceberg) that will spark a nuclear war. Both events may or may not have been caused by Digger\u2019s own company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cDigger got us all into this mess and Digger\u2019s going to dig us out again,\u201d says John Goodman, portraying a frail and unwell US president. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">I\u00f1\u00e1rritu seems to have drawn inspiration for Goodman\u2019s character from the Trump era with the fictional president, oxygen tube under both nostrils, falling asleep as he drops missiles on the floating iceberg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">During a video introduction reel shown at Warner Bros on July 9th, I\u00f1\u00e1rritu said that he began conceiving the idea of Digger \u201cjust after The Revenant [2015], when I had an idea, not script, not a film, just a relentless recurring obsession, that has endured through all these wild years. I knew who this character was\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe film needed Tom [Cruise].
