US<\/a> president \u200cDonald Trump<\/a> told reporters on Monday that the United \u200bStates was attacking Iran<\/a>\u2019s capabilities related to the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, amid renewed military action \u200bbetween the two countries.<\/p>\n

The US military said \u2060on Monday it was launching \u200cfresh strikes \u200cagainst \u200bIran but Trump told reporters at the Oval Office \u200bthat he had not \u200bdecided that a negotiated settlement could \u200cnot be reached with \u200bTehran.<\/p>\n

The United Arab Emirate\u2019s ministry of defence also said late on Monday \u200cthat two national tankers were \u200btargeted by two Iranian cruise missiles in the southern lane \u200bof the Strait of Hormuz \u2060in Omani territorial waters, killing \u200cone \u200cIndian \u200bcrew member and wounding eight others, \u2060including \u200bfour seriously.<\/p>\n

The US president said he \u200bwants Gulf nations \u200bto \u200creimburse the \u200bUnited \u2060States \u2060for \u200bhelping protect the strait.<\/p>\n

Trump also said that it \u2060could be that \u2060there \u200bare Iranian drones in Cuba.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they do have that, and they might very well have that, we\u2019ll take care of it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not going to \u200chave a \u2060problem. We\u2019re not going to allow that to happen so it \u200ccould be that they are storing some. \u200bWe\u2019re looking into it now.<\/p>\n

Earlier on Monday, Trump said the US will reinstate its naval blockade of Iran and charge a 20 per cent fee on cargo passing through the strait.<\/p>\n

Trump said the US would be its \u201cguardian\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Hormuz Strait is OPEN, and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran,\u201d Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Monday. \u201cWe are reinstating … THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE, so named because it is only stopping Iran\u2019s ships or customers from entering or leaving. All other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe U.S.A. will be, from this point forward, known as \u2018THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT,\u2019 but as such, and as a matter of FAIRNESS, will be reimbursed, at the rate of 20% on all cargo shipped, for any and all costs necessary to do the job of providing safety and security.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump added this \u201cprocess and formation\u201d would start immediately. However, he did not specify how exactly the US would implement its plan for the strait, which Washington and Tehran claim to control.<\/p>\n

Iran was supposed to gradually reopen the waterway after it signed an interim deal with the US last month to extend an April ceasefire.<\/p>\n

But after the US encouraged ships to transit along Oman\u2019s coast, Iranian forces began targeting vessels it accused of using an \u201cunauthorised\u201d route through the waterway.<\/p>\n

A 20 per cent US levy would add about $16 in cost to every barrel of crude oil passing through Hormuz, based on current prices, or about $32 million per supertanker using the strait.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s comments follow almost a week of tit-for-tat military exchanges that have risked the return to full-scale war and the collapse of the fragile ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re taking over the strait,\u201d Trump told Fox News on Monday. \u201cWe\u2019re just going to hit them very hard, and we\u2019re going to keep the strait, and we\u2019ll probably run it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran has said several times that it would charge ships additional fees for insurance or a toll to transit the strait in the future, citing the need to cover security and environmental costs.<\/p>\n

However, as part of the memorandum of understanding it signed with the US in June, Trump had lifted the blockade on Iranian ports and Tehran agreed that ships would be able to pass through the strait without being charged for 60 days.<\/p>\n

Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araqchi wrote on X that Tehran was the guardian of the strait and would remain so \u201cforever\u201d, adding in response to Trump\u2019s comments that: \u201c20% is of course too much. We will be \u200bfair.\u201d<\/p>\n

The US had carried out its fifth wave of strikes on Iran in a week on Sunday, hitting what it said were targets including air-defence systems, missile and drone sites and other Iranian military infrastructure.<\/p>\n

It said the strikes came after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired at a commercial vessel and said US forces had intercepted an Iranian cruise missile and drone.<\/p>\n

In response, the IRGC said its forces had carried out multiple rounds of retaliatory operations against US military bases and other targets around the region.<\/p>\n

Shipping traffic through the strait on Monday had fallen to a trickle. <\/p>\n
