\nSinn F\u00e9in TD Aengus \u00d3 Snodaigh’s Private Member’s Bill is scheduled for debate in the D\u00e1il this evening<\/p>\n
Irish musicians, songwriters and composers will host a briefing session at Leinster House today to raise awareness of the impact of AI developments on their artistic careers.<\/p>\n
They are seeking support for Sinn F\u00e9in TD Aengus \u00d3 Snodaigh’s Private Member’s Bill to “protect the copyright of Irish artists in the era of artificial intelligence”, which is scheduled for debate in the D\u00e1il this evening.<\/p>\n
Organisations including the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO), the Screen Composers Guild of Ireland (SCGI), and the Ivors Academy are joining forces with artists including Danny O\u2019Donoghue (the Script) and Tom Dunne (Something Happens) to garner support.<\/p>\n
“It\u2019s vital that the Government backs us on this motion to protect Irish songwriters,” Mr O\u2019Donoghue said, adding that “we must stand up for creators who have dedicated their lives to this craft which is the foundation of Irish culture”.<\/p>\n
“We must give the artists what they deserve – their consent, fair pay and transparency.”<\/p>\n
IMRO has called for strong cross-party support for the Private Member’s Bill.<\/p>\n

Its CEO Victor Finn said a “strong legislative framework will benefit creators, responsible technology companies, cultural organisations and the wider public alike.”<\/p>\n
The SCGI said that the bill seeks to secure commitment from legislators to recognise “the extreme risk for Irish-based composers for screen from unregulated generative AI”.<\/p>\n
Any use of copyright music for commercial purposes “requires a licence and consent from the author” a SCGI spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
The artists said they want politicians to use Ireland\u2019s EU Presidency term to “draw attention to and lead efforts to resolve issues.”<\/p>\n
They are advocating for the creation of a “robust regulatory infrastructure to govern AI in Ireland”.<\/p>\n
Members of songwriters association the Ivors Academy are calling on the Government to support the motion to help “defend the livelihoods of Irish songwriters and composers”.<\/p>\n
The former minister for the arts Catherine Martin, speaking in her role as Head of Policy, Ireland, of the Ivors Academy, said that Ireland has an opportunity “to lead the conversation on creators\u2019 rights during its presidency of the council of the European Union”.<\/p>\n
The academy said that the motion seeks to defend “the rights of Irish artists, authors, creators, and performers against exploitation and misuse and for highlighting the impact of artificial intelligence developments on rights holders”.<\/p>\n
They are looking for Government support to “introduce legislation to ensure fair remuneration, licensing, opt-outs and legal protections for creators.”<\/p>\n
