Serious “broadcasting errors” by the BBC, including at Glastonbury and the BAFTA film awards, “affect confidence in our journalism, trust in the BBC as a public institution, and perceptions about how effectively we are held to account”, the corporation’s chair said.<\/p>\n
The BBC allowed a racial slur to be broadcast during its coverage of the BAFTA film awards in February.<\/p>\n
During the award ceremony, campaigner John Davidson, who has Tourette\u2019s, could be heard shouting as Sinners stars Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo as they presented the award for special visual effects.<\/p>\n
The involuntary verbal tic was not edited out of the broadcast, which was on a two-hour delay.<\/p>\n
Former director general Tim Davie, who announced his resignation in November 2025 and stepped down in April, subsequently said the BBC “profoundly regrets” the incident and added that it was “a genuine mistake”, which “should never have been broadcast”.<\/p>\n

It came after a previous editing incident, which saw the BBC face criticism for continuing to livestream the performance of punk duo Bob Vylan as they led chants of “death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)” at last year’s Glastonbury Festival.<\/p>\n
The BBC is also currently embroiled in a lawsuit with US President Donald Trump over an episode of the BBC documentary series Panorama, broadcast in 2024.<\/p>\n
Mr Trump launched a $10 billion lawsuit, claiming the programme had given the impression he encouraged his supporters to storm the Capitol building in 2021 after he lost the election to Joe Biden.<\/p>\n
Writing in the BBC’s annual report, chairman Samir Shah said: “The challenges faced by the BBC over the past year have been significant – from the Panorama edit of President Trump\u2019s speech on 6 January 2021 and the breach of our Editorial Guidelines by Gaza: How To Survive A Warzone, to the serious broadcasting errors at Glastonbury and the BAFTA film awards.<\/p>\n
“We know that people care deeply about these mistakes. They affect confidence in our journalism, trust in the BBC as a public institution, and perceptions about how effectively we are held to account.<\/p>\n
The board is acutely aware of the standards the BBC must set.<\/p>\n
“I am confident that the changes we have now introduced will ensure that swift, appropriate and transparent action is taken to address editorial issues as effectively as possible, whenever they occur.”<\/p>\n
An internal BBC review of the documentary Gaza: How To Survive A Warzone, concluded it breached editorial guidelines on accuracy, by failing to disclose information about the child narrator\u2019s father\u2019s position within the Hamas-run government.<\/p>\n
Current funding model not sustainable<\/p>\n
The BBC also warned its current funding model was not sustainable to fund its public broadcasting mission in its annual report, highlighting the gap between the number of users it has and those who pay for its services.<\/p>\n
The organisation, which was thrown into crisis last year over accusations of bias, which prompted Mr Trump to sue it, will need to negotiate a new funding settlement with the government before the current one expires at the end of 2027.<\/p>\n
Options include retaining the licence fee paid by TV-watching households or moving \u200cto subscriptions or ad-funding.<\/p>\n
The report also found that while 94% of adults in the UK use the BBC each month but only 80% of UK households pay the licence fee.<\/p>\n
Director General Matt Brittin, a former Google executive who started in May, said the \u200cfunding crisis was “a moment of real jeopardy” for the BBC and the UK, adding that work to reinvent the broadcaster is underway.<\/p>\n
Mr Brittin said it was right that the \u200cgovernment is looking at the level of the licence fee, its scope and how \u200cit is collected in future.<\/p>\n
The government is supportive of the BBC’s conversations with other British broadcasters, such as Channel 4, about bringing content together into a “sovereign media platform” added Mr Brittin.<\/p>\n
The BBC said it has made “a significant commitment to improve its culture, processes and standards in recent years”, after a series of high-profile scandals.<\/p>\n
Amongst its top-paid stars were the radio presenters, Scott Mills, who was paid a salary of \u00a3745,000 to \u00a3749,999 a year, and Greg James, who was paid \u00a3440,000 to \u00a3449,999 a year.<\/p>\n
Political presenter Laura Kuenssberg was paid \u00a3405,000 to \u00a3409,999.<\/p>\n
Mr Mills was fired in \u200cMarch following allegations about his personal conduct.<\/p>\n
