{"id":550633,"date":"2026-07-15T08:30:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T08:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/550633\/"},"modified":"2026-07-15T08:30:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T08:30:10","slug":"firm-behind-irish-rails-failed-e50m-it-system-has-not-delivered-product-to-any-country-dail-committee-to-hear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/550633\/","title":{"rendered":"Firm behind Irish Rail&#8217;s failed \u20ac50m IT system has not delivered product to any country, D\u00e1il committee to hear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n            The contractor for a failed \u20ac50m attempt to upgrade the traffic management of Ireland\u2019s rail network has so far\u00a0failed to deliver its \u201cgeneric product\u201d to a single country, an Oireachtas Committee is to hear.<\/p>\n<p>\n            The Public Accounts Committee will be told on Thursday that Spanish company Indra had assured Irish Rail a \u201cgeneric product\u201d would be delivered to Ireland in 2021, two years after the company won the contract to upgrade the rail management system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            The product was to be delivered before the beginning of a dedicated software development process to upgrade the system by 2024, with Indra informing Irish Rail two other countries would also have the product deployed on their systems before Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            \u201cIt should be noted that as of today, to the best of our knowledge, software supported by this &#8216;generic product&#8217; has not yet been deployed in any railway,\u201d officials will tell the committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            It emerged last May that <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/politics\/arid-41848962.html\"> Irish Rail had opted to discontinue the Indra project<\/a> \u2014 whose cost had ballooned from \u20ac20m to \u20ac50m \u2014 given the time and cost overruns which had dogged the project.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            Officials will tell the PAC Irish Rail had informed the National Transport Authority in mid-2024 of its \u201cincreasing lack of confidence\u201d in Indra\u2019s ability to deliver the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            By the middle of the following year, Irish Rail\u2019s opinion regarding Indra\u2019s capability of delivering the project had not improved, with the NTA then taking a \u201csignificantly more active\u201d role in the contract\u2019s management, the committee will hear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            At the same time, Irish Rail had \u201ccommitted greater internal and third-party resources than\u00a0originally envisaged\u201d in order to get the project back on track, with the agreement of the NTA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            Company officials will note that, when Indra delivered its redeveloped software package for the \u201crelatively simple section\u201d of rail network on the Rosslare line in April 2026, it became \u201cimmediately apparent\u201d many of the systemic issues with the software remained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            The company is set to inform the PAC that in order to mitigate the potential obsolescence of the current rail system, the entire suburban rail network in Ireland will be replaced \u201cin its entirety\u201d, while the main line system will be partially replaced with \u201ca proven in use system\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The contractor for a failed \u20ac50m attempt to upgrade the traffic management of Ireland\u2019s rail network has so&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":550634,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[72,61,60,16456],"class_list":["post-550633","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","tag-business","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-public-transport"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/550633","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=550633"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/550633\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/550634"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=550633"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=550633"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=550633"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
