A man accused of producing a large kitchen knife during an alleged serious assault in Letterkenny has been warned that he could go to prison.<\/p>\n

Abdifatah Ali Ibrahim appeared before Letterkenny District Court.<\/a><\/p>\n

A 22-year-old of Clachan Mor, Windyhall, Letterkenny, Ibrahim is charged with two offences at that address on March 27, 2026.<\/p>\n

He is charged with assault causing harm, contrary to section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.<\/p>\n

Ibrahim is also charged with producing an article capable of inflicting serious injury, namely a large kitchen knife. That charge is contrary to section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are serious matters,\u201d Judge Daly said.<\/p>\n

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins said that directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) are still awaited in the case as there is an outstanding medical report.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At differing points during the hearing, Ibrahim asked if his case could be dealt with on the day. He explained that he wished to move from Letterkenny to Dublin, but was unable to do so as a condition of his bail is to sign on at Letterkenny Garda Station twice a week.<\/p>\n

The accused man attempted to interject while Judge Daly was explaining the process to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease don\u2019t talk across me,\u201d the judge said. Judge Daly told Ibrahim that the matter could not proceed until the DPP had directed which could his case would be heard in.<\/p>\n

The judge reminded Ibrahim that he still had to maintain his bail conditions.<\/p>\n

Sergeant Collins explained that if he went to Dublin and obtained an address his solicitor would apply for him to sign on at a Garda station in the capital instead of Letterkenny.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there is an address, we will have no objection,\u201d Sergeant Collins said.<\/p>\n

Several times, Ibrahim – who outlined that he was a Somalian national – asked if the court could deal with his case and repeated that the incident was a \u201cone time mistake\u201d.<\/p>\n

Judge Daly warned Ibrahim that these are \u201cserious matters for which you could go to prison\u201d.<\/p>\n

Judge Daly explained that the court could not deal with them yet as the DPP has not directed anything on the case yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to go with the process,\u201d Judge Daly said. \u201cI can\u2019t hurry it up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The case was adjourned until September and Judge Daly advised the accused to speak to his legal representative who could bring an application to modify the conditions of his bail.<\/p>\n

Judge Daly also granted certification for a Somalian interpreter to aid Ibrahim on the next court date.<\/p>\n
