Matt Damon admitted he mistook his co-star Tom Holland\u2019s wardrobe struggle as a heartfelt acting choice while they filmed \u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Oscar winner recalled the behind-the-scenes exchange during a Tuesday appearance on \u201cThe Tonight Show,\u201d telling host Jimmy Fallon that he thought Holland, who plays his son Telemachus in the Christopher Nolan-directed film, was giving him a poignant salute in one scene. In reality, Holland was simply trying to stop his costume from choking him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a moment where we see each other, and I\u2019m on a boat and he\u2019s on the shore. And I saw him, and I was kind of on this boat all day, separated from the crew, and he was putting his hand on his heart,\u201d Damon shared. \u201cAnd so, I started to do it, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cAnd, at the end of the day, we reconnected and I was like, \u2018Chris told you to do that? Put your hand on your heart?\u2019 And he goes, \u2018Matt, my costume was choking me!\u2019 He\u2019s like, \u2018I was pulling my [collar].\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Damon defended that where he was standing, Holland\u2019s movement looked like he was \u201csaluting\u201d him as a part of \u201ca father-son moment.\u201d In Damon\u2019s defense, he is nearsighted.<\/p>\n

\u201cNeedless to say, it\u2019s not in the final film,\u201d Damon quipped.<\/p>\n

With \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d hitting theaters on Friday, the epic film was the topic of the evening, with Damon recalling the huge undertaking it took to bring Homer\u2019s poem to life.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Filming] was like six months,\u201d Damon told Fallon. \u201cIt was the hardest [and] most challenging movie I\u2019ve ever been apart of, but it was hard for everybody. I\u2019ve never been more proud to be a part of a crew. Because we shot it all on IMAX, we were in six different countries and Chris Nolan does everything in camera. So, he doesn\u2019t do CGI like, if there are boats in the background, they\u2019re real boats, and if there\u2019s a thousand people fighting, there were a thousand people fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n
