{"id":551181,"date":"2026-07-15T15:45:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T15:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/551181\/"},"modified":"2026-07-15T15:45:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T15:45:09","slug":"building-ireland-explores-the-river-shannon-region-from-leitrim-to-limerick-in-a-new-series-about-rte","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/551181\/","title":{"rendered":"Building Ireland explores the River Shannon region from Leitrim to Limerick in a new series \u2013 About RT\u00c9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\">Join\u00a0geographer Dr Susan Hegarty, Engineer Tim Joyce and Architect Orla Murphy\u00a0as they\u00a0explore\u00a0Ireland\u2019s building and engineering heritage\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">21 July at 7pm on RT\u00c9 One and RT\u00c9 Player<\/p>\n<p>Building Ireland\u00a0returns for another series with\u00a0a six-part series, this time exploring the heritage and\u00a0natural environment that have\u00a0helped define the River Shannon region from Leitrim to Limerick. \u00a0The new series begins on Tuesday 21 July at\u00a07pm\u00a0on RT\u00c9 One and RT\u00c9 Player.<\/p>\n<p>Geographer Dr Susan Hegarty, Engineer Tim Joyce and Architect Orla Murphy\u00a0investigate the topography of\u00a0the\u00a0Shannon\u2019s river\u00a0basin, patterns of human settlement through history, socio economic development, and the rich diversity of natural environments and wildlife which helped build the identity of the people and places on the River Shannon.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Joyce is a leading engineering hydrologist with a lifetime of practical experience who now supervises engineering\u00a0masters\u00a0students in UCD.<\/p>\n<p>Orla Murphy\u00a0is a part-time Assistant Professor of Architecture at UCD and Deputy Co-Head of the School of Architecture Planning and Environmental Policy (APEP), founding Co-Director of the UCD Centre for Irish Towns (CfIT), and owner of Custom Architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Susan Hegarty is\u00a0a\u00a0Professor in Physical and Environmental Geography at the Department of Geography at DCU \u2013 a lecturer, field geographer and published academic author.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of the new series,\u00a0Orla Murphy explores Athlone\u2019s historical and evolving relationship with the River Shannon and the centuries of adaptation at one of Ireland\u2019s most significant river crossings.\u00a0She also\u00a0reveals how a remote monastery on the banks of the River Shannon became St Ciaran\u2019s\u00a0\u201cShining City\u2019\u00a0through its architecture, craftsmanship and strategic position on ancient trade and pilgrimage routes.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Joyce retraces the engineering interventions that made the\u00a0River Shannon fully navigable, from pioneering canals and lock systems to major flood-relief schemes.\u00a0He also\u00a0examines the stories of the engineers, power station\u00a0workers\u00a0and the communities they helped build, while retracing the ingenuity and determination that turned peat from the Midland bogs into electricity for a nation.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Susan Hegarty\u00a0wonders how a remote corner of Leitrim became one of Ireland\u2019s industrial powerhouses as she explores the evolution of the Lough Allen Canal from its origins in the age of mining to its role in the region today.\u00a0She also\u00a0investigates how a small creamery in rural Limerick became the turning point for Ireland\u2019s dairy farmers.
