Coronation Street star Sydney Martin has broken her silence on the huge new storyline involving her character, Betsy Swain<\/a>. The teenager is hospitalised in Wednesday’s (15 July) episode of the ITV soap<\/a>, having been found unconscious.<\/p>\n

After the various checks are completed, it is confirmed that Betsy had two strokes after a blood clot formed in her neck. With damage done to the artery, it is revealed that Betsy was consensually strangled by her boyfriend, Dylan Wilson, during sex.<\/p>\n

The storyline has been developed in collaboration<\/a> with the Institute for Addressing Strangulation (IFAS), the Stroke Association and Safeline. These charities aim to raise awareness of the health risks when it comes to strangulation during sex.<\/p>\n

Regarding the storyline, Martin told The Mirror<\/a> that she was “aware” of strangulation sex due to being in the “same generation as Betsy”. However, the actor added that she was “very shocked” that strokes could “affect young people”.<\/p>\n

As part of the arc, Martin is wearing a special prosthetic to show how a stroke can lead to side effects such as a drooping face. <\/p>\n

“I hope young stroke sufferers will now take comfort knowing they aren’t alone,” she commented. <\/p>\n

“Half her [Betsy’s] body is now paralysed. She has facial drooping on the eye and mouth, and she is slurring [her speech]. We had a prosthetic made in-house, and the makeup team has been putting it on each morning.”<\/p>\n

Martin, who debuted on the ITV soap in 2024, added that she had spoken to stroke survivors in preparation for the storyline. She also sought advice from Emmerdale star Mark Charnock, whose character Marlon Dingle had a stroke in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I am a perfectionist,” she said. “When it comes to a story like this, you want to get it right. I asked many questions. It\u2019s important to me to convey everything as best I can. Stroke sufferers have trouble finding the words.”<\/p>\n

Producer Kate Brooks recently spoke about the storyline, explaining: “Coronation Street has always pushed boundaries when it comes to telling challenging, thought-provoking stories, and this story is no exception.<\/p>\n

“Shining a light on the dangers of this all too common trend, we wanted to chart Betsy and Dylan’s story as they navigate the catastrophic implications of a moment of naivety.” <\/p>\n
