{"id":552717,"date":"2026-07-16T13:12:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T13:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/552717\/"},"modified":"2026-07-16T13:12:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T13:12:09","slug":"no-jail-for-man-who-missed-daughters-wedding-after-gun-and-bomb-joke-at-dublin-airport-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/552717\/","title":{"rendered":"No jail for man who missed daughter\u2019s wedding after \u2018gun and bomb\u2019 joke at Dublin Airport \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">A father, who missed his daughter\u2019s wedding due to a \u201chorrendous\u201d joke about a bomb and a gun at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-airport\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-airport\/\">Dublin Airport<\/a>, has been spared jail and a criminal record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Iraqi national Jamal Hameed (63), of Park Gardens, Hansfield Wood, Dublin pleaded guilty in April to causing a false alarm at Terminal 1 on December 22nd, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Dublin District Court heard that the scare happened when he and his party were travelling abroad for his daughter\u2019s wedding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Judge Karen Dowling was told that when officials asked him if he was carrying any prohibited items, he told them he had a bomb and a gun in his luggage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Pleading for leniency, defence solicitor Paul Byrne said: \u201cIt was a joke, in horrendous bad taste\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">He submitted that his client had no prior criminal convictions and that there was no real threat. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The solicitor stressed that his client was a long-term resident in Ireland with children in university.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The court heard that, as a consequence of Hameed\u2019s remark, he and some family members, who were due to travel with him, had their flights cancelled and that \u201che missed his daughter\u2019s wedding\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Byrne informed the judge that his client was unable to work due to health reasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The judge told him that passing the remark was not right, especially as he was about to catch a flight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">She noted from the defence that the accused, who has lived in Ireland for five years, was willing to engage with the probation service, and she had adjourned the case until Thursday for reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Byrne also provided testimonials on Hameed and asked his client what he had learned from this experience. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Hameed replied, \u201cI have learned many things, this is a very difficult time for me to live in this situation.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Dowling noted his guilty plea and the mitigation presented by Byrne.
