The first images have been released of the completed Athletes’ Village for the 2026 Winter Olympics<\/a> in Milan<\/a>, following its official handover to the Milano Cortina<\/a> Foundation ahead of the Games<\/a> in February. Developed by COIMA<\/a> and designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM)<\/a>, the project has been envisioned as both a temporary<\/a> residence<\/a> for athletes and a long-term urban asset for the city<\/a>. Delivered in 30 months and ahead of schedule, the Village is located within the Porta Romana railway<\/a> yard, and comprises six new residential buildings and the restoration<\/a> of two historic<\/a> structures: the former Squadra Rialzo locomotive workshop and the Basilico building. Together, they provide housing<\/a> for athletes during the Games<\/a>, along with 40,000 square meters of community<\/a> spaces, landscaped courtyards<\/a>, and three sports<\/a> courts.<\/p>\n

Following the Games<\/a>, the Village will be transformed into Italy<\/a>‘s largest student housing<\/a> complex, with 1,700 beds ready for the 2026\/27 academic year. Rental prices will be set below the market average, addressing the city’s shortage of affordable<\/a> student accommodation. The Olympic Plaza and surrounding public spaces will be reprogrammed to feature retail<\/a>, dining, and cultural<\/a> activities, creating a new neighborhood that is integrated into the wider Porta Romana master plan<\/a>, which also includes 320 affordable housing<\/a> units, commercial<\/a> spaces, and extensive green<\/a> areas.<\/p>\n

The project prioritizes environmental<\/a> performance, aligning with Milan’s Air and Climate Plan<\/a> and EU Taxonomy<\/a> requirements. The residential buildings are designed to meet Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB) standards, and have achieved LEED<\/a> Gold and WiredScore Platinum certifications. Strategies include the elimination of fossil fuels, the use of heat pumps, a 1 MW photovoltaic system<\/a>, stormwater reuse, and infrastructure<\/a> for sustainable<\/a> mobility, such as bicycle networks and EV charging. Mass timber<\/a> construction, prefabricated<\/a> facades, and modular<\/a> design helped reduce embodied carbon<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Spanning two cities, two regions, and two autonomous provinces, Milano Cortina 2026<\/a> will be the most geographically extensive Winter Olympics<\/a> to date, covering 22,000 square kilometers across Northern Italy<\/a>. Taking place from February 6 to 22, 2026, the Games will make use of more than 90% pre-existing or temporary venues, emphasizing a legacy-oriented approach to design and infrastructure. The network of sites ranges from<\/a> Milan’s San Siro Stadium<\/a>, Fiera Milano Rho Ice Park<\/a>, Santa Giulia Arena<\/a>, and Unipol Forum, to Cortina d’Ampezzo’s alpine centers and sliding track, the slopes of Bormio and Livigno, the Nordic arenas of Val di Fiemme, the biathlon venue in Anterselva, and the historic<\/a> Verona Arena.<\/p>\n

Milan<\/a>‘s preparations for the 2026 Winter Olympics<\/a> are driving significant urban transformations across the city.<\/a> Among the notable projects, David Chipperfield Architects Berlin, in collaboration with Arup, has completed the Milano Santa Giulia Arena<\/a>, a new venue for the Games. Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Atelier Verticale are developing the CityWave office complex<\/a>, set to become Europe’s largest integrated urban solar roof. Meanwhile, Kengo Kuma & Associates is delivering a biophilic mixed-use development on the former Rizzoli industrial site<\/a>, reimagining the area as a vibrant urban hub.<\/p>\n
