Cllr Brogan’s party colleague Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly strongly supported the motion.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have been contacted on several occasions in relation to the way people in Letterkenny, visitors and businesses alike, are being treated by traffic wardens and it’s nothing short of a disgrace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He gave a report of one incident involving a woman with a newborn baby who mistakenly believed she was entitled to 30 minutes of free parking in an area of the town.<\/p>\n
According to Cllr Kelly, she had been parked for just 16 minutes when she received a ticket.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe manner in which the warden was talking to her was shocking,\u201d he said, adding that two taxi drivers reportedly came over to check if the woman was alright.<\/p>\n
Cllr Kelly said the woman later appealed the fine but the appeal was rejected.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere needs to be more of a common-sense approach,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is high time there was action taken, not just a review of the by-laws but of the role of traffic wardens.\u201d<\/p>\n
Senior Roads Engineer David McIlwaine said he could not comment on individual cases but agreed to pass on members’ comments to the parking section.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe traffic warden role is a difficult role and that needs to be recognised,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In response, Cllr Brogan questioned whether wardens were simply following instructions.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to have a conversation about the behaviour of wardens. Is it the instructions they are being given? Because if it is, it’s the wrong instruction.\u201d<\/p>\n
