Politicians and commuter groups have urged caution about any potential outright ban on electric scooters in public spaces.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, the Taoiseach told the D\u00e1il, he was leaning towards banning e-scooters completely, while Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly said he would support one.<\/p>\n

A report by the Children’s Health Ireland also raised concerns<\/a> about traumatic brain injuries being sustained by children using the vehicles.<\/p>\n

However, questions have been raised about whether existing laws are being adequately enforced.<\/p>\n

Dublin Commuter Coalition member Josh Ellul said an outright ban would be a “blunt force instrument”.<\/p>\n

He said: “Our position is that the Government needs to look at properly enforcing the existing legislation that they have in place before they start talking about an outright ban.<\/p>\n

“An outright ban is a blunt force instrument that is probably not going to actually effectively tackle the illegal use of e-scooters that we’re seeing.”<\/p>\n

Green Party Roderic O’Gorman also urged caution about a total ban.<\/p>\n

“I don’t support a full ban on e-scooters,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I don’t think it’ll work, but more importantly, I think it’s going to unfairly punish the thousands of people who use a e-scooter every single day to get to and from work.”<\/p>\n

Fianna F\u00e1il TD Shane Moynihan said there are specific ways to tackle the issue.<\/p>\n

“I think we need to look at the regulatory framework around e-scooters.<\/p>\n

“I’ve been calling for some time now for a registration, licensing, insuring requirements, so these vehicles are traceable and we can enforce then the under-16 ban that exists already.<\/p>\n

“But this isn’t just about a regulatory framework. It’s about enforcement. It’s about education, and it’s about proactive community policing as well.”<\/p>\n
