John Russell suffered another nightmare Club Orange FAI Cup loss in Mounthawk Park as his first match as Shelbourne boss ended in a shock defeat to Kerry.<\/p>\n
Russell managed Sligo Rovers at the venue when the First Division side famously came from 3-0 down to progress in a quarter-final.<\/p>\n
It was a penalty shootout heartache on this occasion as Kerry emerged 6-5 winners, despite missing their first two kicks and Shels scoring theirs.<\/p>\n
For Kerry, it was another famous giant-killing under manager Colin Healy after their run to the semi-finals in 2025.<\/p>\n
Shelbourne were forced to give a first-team debut to academy goalkeeper Finn Moylan due to Wessel Speel and Conor Walsh being out injured, leaving them without a senior stopper and no replacement on the bench.<\/p>\n
An uneventful first half ended level but it was the second period when drama ensued.<\/p>\n
Odhran Casey received two yellow cards in quick succession to see red on 52 minutes and open up the possibility of the upset.<\/p>\n
But Shels rallied to take the lead through Daniel Kelly with a half hour left.<\/p>\n
However, two mistakes from the rookie goalkeeper turned the game on its head as Sean O’Connell and Cian Murphy scored on 78 and 79 minutes for the home side.<\/p>\n
There was still time for Shels to rescue it as Jack Henry-Francis’s deflected strike in the 92nd minute forced extra-time.<\/p>\n
Kerry missed two massive chances to win it during the additional 30 minutes, yet the teams couldn’t be separated and spot-kicks decided it.<\/p>\n
It was Moylan who saw his night dramatically alter as he saved the first two Kerry penalties and it looked as if the shock was off the cards.<\/p>\n
But Kerry netminder Harry Halwax then kept out three penalties, including a decisive Sean Gannon kick, for a sudden-death victory.<\/p>\n
The Reds must now regroup for their UEFA Conference League tie next week with Estonian side Nomme Kalju.<\/p>\n
Dundalk FC saw off St. Mochta’s 3-1 at Oriel Park with goals coming from Shane Treacy, Trevor Clarke and Harry Groome for the Louth side.<\/p>\n
They were in control going into the second half with a 2-0 lead before Groome got the third just after the hour mark. St. Mochta’s managed to pull one back in the last 10 minutes through a Dean Morgan header.<\/p>\n
It was a narrow affair at Markets Field where it took UCD until the 79th minute to find a lead. Things weren’t going the Limerick sides way when Colm Whelan was sent off after just 33 minutes. However, four minutes later UCD conceded a penalty and Ronan Manning converted to put Treaty 1-0 up.<\/p>\n
UCD found their equaliser on 62 mins through Hughie Smith and so we went into the final 25 minutes with everything to play for. Charles Akimrintoyo added the second and knocked Treaty out of the Cup.<\/p>\n
It was a comfortable 3-0 affair for Athlone Town as Josh Farnham scored a goal in his debut with Patrick Ferry and Aaron Connolly also contributing to the scoreboard.<\/p>\n
It took just four minutes for Mark Doyle to open the scoring for Drogheda United as they ran out 4-0 winners over Lucan United. Thomas Oluwa slipped a ball into his path and he defeated two defenders to stick the ball in the net.<\/p>\n
Doyle got his second just before half-time after Brandon Kavanagh delivered in a cross and he headed home. Drogheda’s third came after Jason Bucknor made a driving run into the box and his strike rebounding into the net. Things went from bad to worst for Lucan then when Stephen Odiashi was adjudicated to have brought down Bucknor in the box, conceding a penalty. Oluwa converted from the spot. Odiashi was then sent off for a second yellow on the 76th minute.<\/p>\n
A late injury time winner saw Bray Wanderers beat Finn Harps 1-0 at Finn Park. It was a tense affair with both sides having ample opportunities to give their side the lead. With things still level heading into the final 90 minutes, it looked like extra-time might be on the cards but then up popped Conor Knight to give them a 92nd minute winner.<\/p>\n
A trio of goals in the first half had Galway United comfortably in the driving seat in their 4-0 win against Crumlin United at Pearse Stadium. Crumlin conceded a penalty in the first 10 minutes which Matty Wolfe converted straight down the middle. Francely Lomboto, returning to the team, added the second on 23 minutes before Wolfe added his second before half-time to make it 3-0.<\/p>\n
Stephen Walsh made it 4-0 on 49 minutes. Kris Twardek placed a swinging cross into the back post where Walsh was waiting and he headed it past the goalkeeper.<\/p>\n
