But be it voluntary or forced, having an early retirement means you need money for a longer period compared to someone who retires at 60. If you retire at 40 or 45, your retirement may stretch for 40-45 years. So, it is important to know the amount required for an early retirement. What if you plan to retire with a Rs 1 crore corpus at 45 years of age? Will such a corpus help you sustain throughout your life, or you need a higher amount?

Is Rs 1 crore enough to retire early in India today?

Vishwajeet Goel, head of Pensionbazaar, told ET Wealth Online the decision to retire with a Rs 1 crore corpus depends on three things- your annual expenses, the number of years your retirement corpus needs to last and inflation.
Assuming post-retirement expenses of around Rs 60,000 per month (Rs 7.2 lakh annually) and inflation of 6%, a Rs 1 crore corpus is insufficient for an early retirement, Goel explains.

Also Read: Is your employer delaying deposit into your NPS? Know how it can impact you

Raj Khosla, founder & managing director, MyMoneyMantra.com, told ET Wealth that a Rs 1 crore corpus can be sufficient only when the retiree’s yearly expenses are low or they have an additional income source (such as rent, pension, etc.).

What’s the amount required for retiring at 40-55 years of age?

As Goel said, it depends on your annual expenses that may vary from person to person.

Ajay Kumar Yadav, CFPCM, Group CEO & CIO, Wise Finserv, gives the retirement corpus amounts required for 40-55 years old persons with Rs 50,000 monthly expenses.

Also Read: Can banks increase FD interest rates as inflation crosses RBI’s target of 4%?

Yadav says assuming a 10% long-term portfolio return, 6% inflation and income required until age 90, a person requiring Rs 50,000 per month may need approximately:

Retirement age Retirement period up to age 90 Corpus required 40 50 years Approximately Rs 1.30 crore 45 45 years Approximately Rs 1.25 crore 50 40 years Approximately Rs 1.20 crore 55 35 years Approximately Rs 1.13 crore (Source: Ajay Kumar Yadav)

While corpus should grow with time, targeting a 10% annualised return from the corpus can be too ambitious as it means investing some of your amount in equities too. Most experts advise investing retirement corpus in debt or hybrid funds where returns may be low, but stability is high. Or they advise investing in equities the corpus required in the long term.

Should you invest in one product to get stable monthly income in retirement?

Many investments provide an interest rate of more than 7%. Someone having a Rs 1 crore corpus for an early retirement can invest it in an instrument delivering a 7% rate or higher, from where they may get a fixed income of Rs 7-8 lakh every year. But even if they lock-in their corpus for a high interest rate, will the same monthly income be sufficient 10 years down the line.

Also Read: 8th Pay Commission HRA calculator: Can HRA go up to Rs 1,93,000/month? Though equities don’t provide a fixed return and their value can fall in a market downturn, they help investors beat inflation in the long run. Historically, equities have also given higher returns than many fixed interest investments. So, if investing the entire corpus in one asset is not a smart idea, where should a retiree invest their Rs 1 crore corpus?

Khosla suggest having a mixed investment portfolio where 40%-50% can be invested in hybrid mutual funds and/or index funds for long-term growth, 35%-45% in debt mutual funds, fixed deposits (FDs), and/or high-quality bonds, and the rest in a savings account and/or liquid funds as an emergency fund and for covering a couple of years’ living expenses.

Goel too advises investing in a combination of debt instruments for stability, equity for long-term growth, and liquid funds for emergencies.

“Rather than investing the entire amount in one asset class, retirees should diversify across income-generating and growth-oriented investments. The objective should be to create predictable income while ensuring the corpus continues to grow enough to combat inflation,” says Goel.

Asset allocation for Rs 1 crore corpus

Portfolio component Allocation Amount Main purpose Cash and liquid investments 12% ₹12 lakh Emergency reserve and immediate liquidity High-quality debt and regular-income investments 33% ₹33 lakh Regular income and stability Balanced Advantage, Equity Savings and Multi-Asset Funds 25% ₹25 lakh Additional income through controlled SWP Indian and global equity funds 25% ₹25 lakh Long-term growth and inflation protection Gold 5% ₹5 lakh Diversification Total 100% ₹1 crore (Source: Ajay Kumar Yadav)

Monthly withdrawal from Rs 1 crore corpus

The basic fundamental behind the withdrawal rate is that it should be lower than the growth rate. Many experts say that a 4% is a good withdrawal rate for the long-term sustainability of the corpus.

Goel says retirement planners often recommend an initial withdrawal rate of around 3% to 4% annually, particularly for those retiring early.

Monthly withdrawals from Rs 1 crore corpus for 45-55-year olds

Retirement Age Suggested Initial Withdrawal Rate Approximate Monthly Income from ₹1 Crore Corpus 45 years Around 3% ₹25,000 per month 50 years Around 3.5% ₹29,000 per month 55 years Around 4% ₹33,000 per month (Source: Vishwajeet Goel)
Khosla says one can set monthly withdrawals considering expected annualised returns and inflation. He opines one can also increase the withdrawal amount if they retire late.

Monthly withdrawals from Rs 1 crore corpus for 45-55-year olds

Retirement Age Expected Annual Investment Return Assumed Inflation Approximate Monthly Income from ₹1 Crore Corpus 40 years 9%–10% 5%–6% ₹33,000–₹37,500 45 years 9%–10% 5%–6% ₹30,000–₹33,000 55 years 9%–10% 5%–6% ₹37,500–₹42,000 (Source: Raj Khosla)

Bucket strategy for short-term needs and long-term growth of corpus

Rather than investing the entire corpus in a one or two assets, expert suggest investing in different assets based on time horizon and liquidity. They recommend investing it through the bucket strategy, where investors can invest the corpus in three buckets.

Goel says In Bucket 1, one invests amount (15-20% of the corpus) that they need for the next 0-3 years. Such an investment can be made in low-risk, high liquidity assets such as savings account, liquid mutual funds, short-duration debt instruments.

In Bucket 2, you invest amount (40-45% of the corpus) for 3-10 years to generate relatively stable returns while preserving capital. It can include high-quality debt funds, fixed deposits, government-backed savings schemes and high-quality bonds. It replenishes Bucket 1 periodically.

In Bucket 3, you invest money (35-45% of the corpus) required after 10+ years in equities.

“This bucket is generally invested in diversified equity mutual funds or other long-term growth assets and is tapped only after several years,” says Goel.

Bucket strategy for Rs 1 crore corpus

Bucket Allocation of ₹1 Crore Corpus Recommended Investments Purpose Bucket 1 ₹15–20 lakh Savings account, liquid mutual funds, money market funds, short-term fixed deposits Provides regular monthly income and meets immediate cash needs. Bucket 2 ₹30–40 lakh Short- and medium-duration debt mutual funds, high-quality corporate bonds, government securities, bank fixed deposits Replenishes Bucket 1 while generating higher returns than cash. Bucket 3 ₹40–55 lakh Broad-market index funds, flexi-cap mutual funds, large-cap equity funds, international equity Long-term growth bucket designed to beat inflation over decades. (Source: Raj Khosla)
Early retirement can be your choice for many reasons, but before taking this step, one must ensure that they have a corpus that lasts decades. A sustainable corpus requires adequate corpus size, diversified and disciplined withdrawals. It also needs a strategy that can balance regular income with growth and provide you monthly expenses lifelong.

Many employees in their mid-40s or early 50s whose jobs are being hit by modern technologies such as…

[14
234970,72,176,37338,61,60,234969,174,175,234966,234967,234971,105775,234968
post-555640","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-personal-finance","tag-best-retirement-planning-calculator","tag-business","tag-finance","tag-financial-planning-for-retirement","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-life-insurance-and-retirement-planning","tag-personal-finance","tag-personalfinance","tag-retirement-planning-calculator","tag-retirement-planning-calculator-india","tag-retirement-planning-guide","tag-sip-calculator","tag-what-is-retirement-planning
["GET
