Dubois said she first encountered german\u2019s art in 2023 at the Montclair Art Museum. The exhibition, titled \u201cvanessa german: \u2026please imagine all the things I cannot say\u2026,\u201d featured, among other pieces, a sculptural interpretation of Gen. George Washington crossing the Delaware River, which is now on view at the Michener Museum of Art in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.\n<\/p>\n
Dubois said she immediately felt a connection with the artist and her work.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cAs I was standing in her work in Montclair, I was like, \u2018This is kinfolk. I know this woman,\u2019\u201d Dubois said. \u201cI often ask myself, \u2018Why am I doing this museum?\u2019 The name of her exhibition and the content answered that question: Please imagine all the things I cannot say. This house is the canvas and the vehicle through which I get to express all the things that I don\u2019t have words for.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
Dubois and german then began learning about each other and developing german\u2019s ideas for an installation. Dubois said she was taken aback by german\u2019s request to remove everything from the living and dining rooms, which had been filled with art, and paint the walls black.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cI was, like, \u2018Holy cow!\u2019 Dubois said. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize until we started painting, I was, like, \u2018Oh my god, she\u2019s calling for a black box theater.\u2019 I\u2019m a theater artist and I\u2019ve been saying for the longest time that theater is part of how this house is organized, but most people don\u2019t see it because they\u2019re not supposed to.
