Ann Droid, the new comedy series starring and co-created by Diane Morgan, has arrived on BBC One and iPlayer. It’s one of the most hotly anticipated sitcoms of the year, but now it’s finally here, are viewers satisfied with it?<\/p>\n

The show, written by Morgan alongside Taskmaster star Sarah Kendall, is set in 2029 and sees Sue Johnston play Sue, a widow whose husband died 18 months prior. She eventually gets some company, in the form of a human-like assistance robot named Linda (Morgan).<\/p>\n

Digital Spy awarded the sitcom a maximum five stars<\/a>, calling it “sharp, witty and gorgeously funny”, adding: “Dark undertones may weave in and out, but the heart and the laughter win out every time making it an absolute must-watch.”<\/p>\n

It seems as if viewers are in agreement, with one fan posting on BlueSky<\/a>: “I’ve just finished the series. It’s funny of course, but deeply touching and with a sharp, respectful eye on what it is to age. Diane Morgan has never put a foot wrong.”<\/p>\n

Praise was similarly high over on X as one user<\/a> dubbed it “properly funny”, while another<\/a> praised the “top notch” performances from Morgan and Johnston. One user<\/a>, meanwhile, went as far as naming it their “new favourite telly show”.<\/p>\n

Another post reads<\/a>: “Just watched the first episode of #anndroid by @Sarah_Kendall and Diane Morgan, and it is a great piece of writing and acting. Deserves to be a hit with viewers #suesuesue.”<\/p>\n

Speaking of her inspiration for the show, Morgan recently said<\/a>: “I read a story in the paper which said that, apparently, they were rolling them [robots] out in Japan. I told Pippa [Brown], my producer, and we started laughing about it.” <\/p>\n

“It was also inspired by the time in lockdown when I decided to send my mum a tablet so she could do online shopping – she reacted like I’d sent her a nail bomb,” she added.<\/p>\n

And on the role of AI in society now and going forward, she quipped: “I definitely think we’ll have robots looking after us in the future. Whether they’ll end up killing us or not I can’t say. That’s none of my business.”<\/p>\n
