The Rolling Stones<\/a>\u00a0have drawn level with\u00a0The Beatles<\/a>\u00a0after scoring their 15th UK Number One album with \u2018Foreign Tongues<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n

The band\u2019s 25th studio record, which was released on July 10, debuted at the top of the Official Albums Chart yesterday (July 17), matching the success of their previous record, 2023\u2019s \u2018Hackney Diamonds<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n

The achievement puts\u00a0the Stones alongside\u00a0the\u00a0Fab Four\u00a0on 15 UK Number One albums each, with only\u00a0Robbie Williams<\/a>\u00a0ahead of them on the all-time list.<\/p>\n

Williams overtook The Beatles in January when \u2018BRITPOP\u2019 became his 16th solo chart-topper<\/a>.\u00a0Taylor Swift<\/a>\u00a0follows The Stones and The Beatles with 14 Number Ones, while\u00a0Elvis Presley<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Madonna<\/a>\u00a0have\u00a013 each.<\/p>\n

The Stones\u2019 first chart-topping album was their self-titled debut in 1964, meaning the band have now returned to the summit more than 62 years later.<\/p>\n

\u2018Foreign Tongues\u2019 features guest contributions from\u00a0Paul McCartney<\/a>,\u00a0The Cure<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0Robert Smith<\/a>,\u00a0Steve Winwood<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Red Hot\u00a0Chili Peppers<\/a>\u00a0drummer Chad Smith, alongside an appearance from late Stones drummer Charlie Watts taken from one of his final recording sessions before his death in 2021.<\/p>\n

McCartney plays bass on \u2018Covered\u00a0In\u00a0You\u2019,\u00a0with\u00a0Mick Jagger previously telling\u00a0NME\u00a0that working with the former Beatle had been \u201cvery easy\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Smith, meanwhile,\u00a0plays guitar on \u2018Divine Intervention\u2019 and contributes synth and backing vocals to \u2018Never Wanna Lose You\u2019<\/a>, although The Cure\u00a0frontman\u00a0initially turned down the chance to collaborate because he \u201cwasn\u2019t really prepared for it\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Stones celebrated the arrival of the album with a star-studded launch party in London earlier this month<\/a>, attended by\u00a0Daniel Craig<\/a>,\u00a0Rachel Weisz<\/a>,\u00a0Sam Fender<\/a>,\u00a0Sacha Baron Cohen<\/a>, John McEnroe,\u00a0Glen\u00a0Matlock<\/a>\u00a0and Vernon Kay.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the launch, Jagger and Wood also expressed their hope that the band would take the album out on tour.\u00a0\u201cRonnie and I are really into that, so we hope to see everyone on the road,\u201d\u00a0he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

The Stones have also launched a six-part podcast series,\u00a0Speaking\u00a0In\u00a0Tongues<\/a>, to accompany the record. Narrated by Norah Jones<\/a>, it features new interviews with Jagger, Keith Richards,\u00a0Wood\u00a0and archival contributions from Watts.<\/p>\n

Jagger previously told\u00a0NME\u00a0that the band had no plans to slow down<\/a>, revealing that he had already begun writing material that could potentially form a third album in their recent run.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, it could be a trio,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve\u00a0already started writing songs anyway. They could be for other people though. When you write a song, you sometimes decide, \u2018That\u2019s not for me, but it could be for the Chili\u00a0Peppers\u2019,\u00a0or whatever.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got a lot of stuff, and not all of\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0suitable for The Rolling Stones,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt\u00a0shouldn\u2019t\u00a0stop me writing them, you know. If you get an idea, just write it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a three-and-a-half-star review of \u2018Foreign Tongues\u2019<\/a>,\u00a0NME\u00a0described the album as \u201cfresh and refined\u201d,\u00a0adding: \u201cMick, Keith and Ronnie have hit a surprising purple patch \u2013 and if you believe the eternally energetic entertainer\u2019s claim that he\u2019s already writing the follow-up to \u2018Foreign Tongues\u2019,\u00a0there\u2019s plenty more left in the tank.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jagger also recently clarified the meaning of a lyric referring to Elon Musk as a \u201cmad mogul\u201d on album track \u2018Mr\u00a0Charm\u2019<\/a>,\u00a0insisting that the line was intended as a \u201csidewinding compliment\u201d about the SpaceX founder\u2019s involvement in bringing stranded astronauts back to Earth.<\/p>\n

He also told\u00a0NME\u00a0that he is a fan of Sam Fender<\/a>, describing his\u00a0Mercury Prize-winning <\/a>album \u2018People Watching<\/a>\u2019 as \u201cexcellent\u201d and suggesting that the singer-songwriter could make a suitable guest at a future Stones show.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Rolling Stones\u00a0have drawn level with\u00a0The Beatles\u00a0after scoring their 15th UK Number One album with \u2018Foreign Tongues\u2019.
