Conan O\u2019Brien<\/a> had some fun during a stop by \u201cThe Late Show With Stephen Colbert<\/a>\u201d on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cStephen, how\u2019s late night? What\u2019s going on?\u201d the former late night talk show host said, feigning ignorance about Colbert\u2019s looming cancellation and Jimmy Kimmel getting pulled off the air last month.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been out of it for a little bit,\u201d he quipped<\/a>, asking Colbert to \u201cCatch me up on what\u2019s happening!\u201d<\/p>\n

Colbert, whose show is set to end in May, retorted back, \u201cI\u2019ll send you the obituary.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien kept up his bit, recounting a special memory with all of the other hosts.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember just as I was leaving my late night show, I took you and all the other late night hosts out,\u201d he said. \u201cDo you remember this? I took you to a wonderful Sizzler restaurant, and we all had our trays and I told you guys \u2014 remember what I told you? I said, \u2018Take care of late night. If you take care of late night, late night will take care of you.\u2019 Remember?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018Don\u2019t do anything to ruffle any feathers.\u2019 Remember? I said that,\u201d O\u2019Brien explained. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018Whatever you do, don\u2019t speak truth to power.\u2019 I said, \u2018Cowardice is the way.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 28 years of my show, I never read the news,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

The new version of the late night wars started in July, when CBS unceremoniously announced<\/a> that it was ending Colbert\u2019s \u201cLate Show\u201d \u2015 for good \u2015 in May 2026.<\/p>\n

The network insisted the move was \u201cpurely a financial decision\u201d but many suspected it was politically motivated<\/a> because the announcement came days after Colbert made a joke ripping CBS parent company Paramount\u2019s $16 million settlement<\/a> with President Donald Trump as it sought permission to merge with Skydance.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien responded to Colbert\u2019s cancellation at the time with an ominous warning<\/a> about the future of late night TV.<\/p>\n

\u201cLate night television, as we have known it since around 1950, is going to disappear,\u201d the former \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d writer said during his induction speech at the Television Academy Hall of Fame ceremony in August.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut those voices are not going anywhere. People like Stephen Colbert are too talented \u2015 and too essential \u2015 to go away. It\u2019s not going to happen,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Two months later, Jimmy Kimmel was pulled from the air<\/a> for six days for comments he made related to the suspect in Charlie Kirk\u2019s killing.<\/p>\n

When Kimmel\u2019s show returned last week, he called out the scary efforts to curb free speech<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur freedom to speak is what they admire most about this country,\u201d the late night show host said in his first show back. \u201cAnd that\u2019s something I\u2019m embarrassed to say I took for granted until they pulled my friend Stephen off the air and tried to coerce the affiliates who run our show in the cities that you live in to take my show off the air.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not legal, that\u2019s not American,\u201d he stated. \u201cThat is un-American. And it\u2019s so dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n
