{"id":557623,"date":"2026-07-19T15:15:25","date_gmt":"2026-07-19T15:15:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/557623\/"},"modified":"2026-07-19T15:15:25","modified_gmt":"2026-07-19T15:15:25","slug":"argentina-head-coach-felipe-contepomi-accuses-england-of-lack-of-respect-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/557623\/","title":{"rendered":"Argentina head coach Felipe Contepomi accuses England of \u2018lack of respect\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/argentina-rugby\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/argentina-rugby\/\">Argentina<\/a> head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/felipe-contepomi\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/felipe-contepomi\/\">Felipe Contepomi<\/a> accused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/england-rugby\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/england-rugby\/\">England<\/a> of showing a \u201clack of respect\u201d after storming out of his press conference following the Pumas\u2019 31-24 defeat in Santiago del Estero.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Contepomi took exception to the music and cheering that could be heard coming from England\u2019s changing room next door as their players celebrated a triumphant conclusion to their July tour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Having asked the England representative present in the room to have the noise stop, Contepomi then lost patience and stalked out of the room saying that he was leaving because of the \u201clack of respect\u201d being shown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It came after Argentina were denied a try that, if converted, would have snatched a draw deep into overtime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Argentina crossed in the third minute of overtime through Bautista Delguy only for video referee Brett Cronan to rule out the try because it was grounded on the sideline due to a magnificent tackle by Henry Slade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A chaotic showdown saw England build a 19-3 interval lead and then face down two comebacks by the hosts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Borthwick said: \u201cI\u2019m delighted for the players. They showed incredible spirit, led brilliantly by Jamie George.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMatches between England and Argentina, whatever the sport, seem to end up being very tight late on and full of drama,<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s almost unfair to pull out one example but Henry Slade\u2019s tackle at the end was incredible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt shows the fight that\u2019s in this group of players, as well as their togetherness and connection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cRight now these players deserve a fantastic holiday, a good night out tonight and a good rest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey\u2019ve worked hard and it\u2019s been a season that\u2019s been going a while.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe all know about the number of minutes the English players play and these guys have stuck it right to the very end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">England\u2019s victory came despite having four players being sent to the sinbin in Jack van Poortvliet, Alex Coles, Henry Pollock and Emmanuel Iyogun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It meant they played a total of nine minutes with 13 men and increases their total of yellow cards over the last eight Tests to 14. Borthwick hit back at questions about England\u2019s discipline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Borthwick said: \u201cI don\u2019t think now is the time to be digging into that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis team has done really, really well.
