After all, it\u2019s highly unusual for a centuries-old poem that everyone was forced to read in school to be the basis of a popcorn movie.<\/p>\n

\n\tThose mighty ticket sales are a testament to the appeal of director Christopher Nolan<\/a>, who has become a box office brand unto himself through blockbusters like \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d the \u201cDark Knight\u201d trilogy, \u201cInception\u201d and \u201cInterstellar.\u201d With \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d he secured the biggest global debut of his career<\/a>, surpassing the benchmark set by 2012\u2019s \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises\u201d with $249 million, not adjusted for inflation. \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d also ranks as the year\u2019s third-largest domestic and worldwide opening following \u201cToy Story 5\u201d ($159 million domestic, $312 million global) and \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d ($131 million domestic, $372 million global), two sequels in major film franchises.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is a Christopher Nolan tour-de-force,\u201d\u00a0says David A. Gross, who publishes the box office newsletter FranchiseRe. \u201cHaving directed 13 films, Nolan has become a unique and singular talent, with a loyal and enthusiastic following.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAn adaptation of Homer\u2019s 3,000-year-old Greek epic, \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d follows Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, who endures a long and treacherous journey home after the Trojan War. Matt Damon leads the starry ensemble, which includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong\u2019o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo and Jon Bernthal. With stellar reviews, euphoric word-of-mouth and the full-blown frenzy<\/a> around premium formats, \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d is primed to enjoy an epic run in theaters. (That\u2019s a relief, since Universal spent a staggering $250 million to produce the film.) Now that its grand voyage has begun, Variety unpacks five reasons \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d scored in its opening weekend.<\/p>\n

\t\tAll In on Imax\t<\/p>\n

\n\tSure, Damon, Hathaway and Holland are the stars of \u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d But one could argue the real draw is Imax, the technology that\u2019s central to Nolan\u2019s big-screen vision. Because Imax cameras are loud and cumbersome, most movies only utilize the company\u2019s high-tech devices for certain action sequences. \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d is significant as the first feature shot entirely with Imax cameras, a feat that Nolan has referred to as his \u201clongest-held ambition.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf you don\u2019t see \u2018The Odyssey\u2019 in Imax, you aren\u2019t seeing it in the way that Chris Nolan intended,\u201d the company\u2019s CEO Richard Gelfond told Variety after opening weekend.<\/p>\n

\n\tPlenty of moviegoers heeded that call. Imax accounted for $51.8 million (or 23%) of initial global ticket sales, standing as the company\u2019s biggest opening in like-for-like markets \u2014 above a little blockbuster called \u201cAvengers: Endgame.\u201d And it\u2019s currently pacing ahead of \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d which was a juggernaut in Imax with $35 million worldwide to start and $180 million by the end of its run, contributing roughly 20% of overall revenues.<\/p>\n

\n\tImax, which is offering \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d (and \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d alone) for three entire weeks, has been scheduling showtimes at odd hours of the day to accommodate the stratospheric demand. Movie lovers are going to great lengths to see the film in the coveted 70mm auditoriums, with some deranged determined fans booking 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. screenings<\/a> of the nearly three-hour epic. Those 70mm screens \u2014 and there are only 41 in the entire world \u2014 contributed a mighty $6.3 million over the weekend. If you didn\u2019t snag a ticket a year ago, good luck \u2014 many Imax locations are fully booked through August.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe have showtimes in certain formats that are sold out for next weekend, the weekend after, and even mid-week,\u201d says Universal\u2019s president of domestic distribution Jim Orr. Of those brave souls who opted to watch \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d in the dead of the night, lest they not get a chance to see the movie in 70mm at all, Orr jokes, \u201cWe thank them for their patronage and hope they drive home safely.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tAll Hail Nolan\t<\/p>\n

\n\tNolan has already been established as the rare director who can get people to buy a ticket on the strength of his name. As the follow-up to \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d a somber period piece about the father of the atomic bomb, \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d is further proof that Nolan can get butts in seats no matter the genre. It\u2019s one thing to pack \u2019em in for comic book adaptations (\u201cThe Dark Knight\u201d series), sci-fi mind-benders (\u201cInception\u201d and \u201cInterstellar\u201d) or sweeping war dramas (\u201cDunkirk\u201d). But who else could turn a sword-and-sandal adventure that\u2019s R-rated, nearly three hours long and isn\u2019t a sequel into populist fare?<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBy any right, this three-hour epic would be viewed as a risk if anyone else had done it,\u201d says Shawn Robbins, director of movie analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory. \u201cBut he\u2019s used his success to cultivate a wide audience. There\u2019s an incredible amount of goodwill for Nolan as a filmmaker, not just in the industry but also with casual moviegoers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d studios might not even wait to hear Nolan\u2019s next pitch before writing the filmmaker a blank check.<\/p>\n

\t\tAll-Audience Blockbuster \t<\/p>\n

\n\tPeople have jokingly referred to \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d as the ultimate dad movie, yet Nolan even captivated the TikTok generation. A surprising 50% of audience members were between 18 and 34 years old, underscoring the director\u2019s appeal to cinephiles of all ages. That\u2019s a notable turnout for moviegoers under a certain age, considering Bronze-Age epics aren\u2019t exactly the genre du jour of Gen Z.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe easy and natural assumption is \u2018The Odyssey\u2019 would have an older fanbase,\u201d says Robbins. \u201cBut Nolan tapped into all crowds. It\u2019s a sword-and-sandal movie, but it\u2019s also a fantasy adventure and a reflective character study. The story translates across ages.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tContrast that to Steven Spielberg\u2019s sci-fi conspiracy thriller \u201cDisclosure Day,\u201d which appealed overwhelmingly to Gen Xers and Baby Boomers, with 60% of opening weekend crowds above 35 years old. Spielberg, a household name thanks to behemoths like \u201cJaws,\u201d \u201cE.T. the Extra-Terrestrial\u201d and \u201cJurassic Park,\u201d may be the most commercially successful director of all time. After spending much of the past decade on adult dramas like \u201cThe Post,\u201d \u201cThe Fabelmans\u201d and \u201cWest Side Story,\u201d however, he\u2019s not as popular in the eyes of younger moviegoers as he is with their parents.<\/p>\n

\t\tAll About the Big Screen\t<\/p>\n

\n\tAny ol\u2019 marketing guru can turn a movie like \u201cBarbie,\u201d \u201cWicked\u201d or \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u201d into a leave-the-home worthy event. With \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d Universal turned not just the film but the cinematic experience into a cultural happening. People weren\u2019t just eager to see \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d they wanted to watch the battles with gods, monsters and witches on the biggest of screens. That was all by design. \u201cThe Odyssey\u2019s\u201d big-screen journey began long, long ago \u2014 last summer, when Imax tickets went on sale (and promptly sold out) an entire year before the movie\u2019s premiere. To further drive home the point that Nolan\u2019s films are designed for cinemas, audiences were treated last December to the nearly six-minute prologue of \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d ahead of Imax 70mm screenings of \u201cSinners\u201d and \u201cOne Battle After Another.\u201d There was no confusion that theaters would be the only place to catch \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNolan is one of the most trusted filmmakers ever, and audiences know he\u2019s going to deliver something that you want to experience on the big screen,\u201d Orr says.<\/p>\n

\t\tAll the Hype Was Justified\t<\/p>\n

\n\tAnticipation was high for \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d on the heels of 2023\u2019s \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d Nolan\u2019s first Oscar best-picture winner. But goodwill wouldn\u2019t last long without quality to match the hype. In that respect, \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d doesn\u2019t just talk the talk. It\u2019s one of the best-reviewed films of the year, securing an \u201cA\u201d grade on CinemaScore exit polls and a sterling 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.
