{"id":559556,"date":"2026-07-20T20:21:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T20:21:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/559556\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T20:21:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T20:21:11","slug":"hospitality-entrepreneur-denies-alleged-e270000-debt-over-hotel-lease-agreement-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/559556\/","title":{"rendered":"Hospitality entrepreneur denies alleged \u20ac270,000 debt over hotel lease agreement \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hospitality entrepreneur Alan Clancy is opposing a High Court bankruptcy petition brought against him over an alleged debt of more than \u20ac278,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Businessman Sean McGowan wants Clancy to be adjudicated a bankrupt over the alleged non-payment of money under a lease agreement, between the men, relating to Oldcastle House Hotel in Co Meath.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Clancy denied the debt \u201cin full\u201d and intended to pursue a counterclaim by way of a separate lawsuit, the court heard on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He controls hospitality group NolaClan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McGowan, of Grants Court, Greenogue Business Park, Rathcoole, Co Dublin, agreed to lease the Co Meath premises to Clancy, with an address at Hanover Quay, Dublin 2, in March 2017.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>Will the State\u2019s plan for the Carlton Cinema site revitalise O\u2019Connell Street?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In his petition for bankruptcy against Clancy, McGovern said he was owed \u20ac160,000 in unpaid rent by Clancy, plus about \u20ac119,000 in late payment interest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At Monday\u2019s hearing, Keith Farry, for Clancy, told Judge Liam Kennedy his side was seeking to advance a defence to the bankruptcy summons. Counsel said his client was solvent and denied the debt alleged \u201cin full\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is Clancy\u2019s case he entered into an agreement with McGowan in October 2020 in respect of certain arrears and future rental and insurance payments. The alleged agreement arose in circumstances where restrictions on the hospitality sector brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic affected business at the hotel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Farry said that under the agreement, in advance of a sale of the premises, Clancy would continue to operate the hotel and ready it for sale.
