A first-look image of Sheridan Smith’s first film role in four years<\/a> has been released ahead of its world premiere. Directed by Rebel Wilson, Girl Group is set to premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival on 11 September.<\/p>\n

Alongside Smith and Wilson, who also appears in the cast, Girl Group stars Marvel’s Randall Park, Derry Girls’ Jamie-Lee O\u2019Donnell and Man Like Mobeen’s Guz Khan.<\/p>\n

The film centres on Wilson’s character, a pop diva who is kicked out of the reunion tour for her girl group, played by music icons Ashley Roberts of The Pussycat Dolls, Mel C from the Spice Girls, and Shaznay Lewis of All Saints.<\/p>\n

A first-look image that accompanied the announcement shows both Wilson and Smith in character on stage, looking as glamorous as you would expect from pop stars, dressed head-to-toe in sequins. <\/p>\n

Sharing the new image on Instagram<\/a>, creator Rebel Wilson wrote: “We can\u2019t wait for the world premiere of GIRL GROUP at the Toronto International Film Festival, September 11th! <\/p>\n

“Thank you @tiff_net<\/a>, thank you to my incredible cast and crew – this movie is if fun and girl power and friendship had a threesome! It\u2019s funny, emotional and chocka block full of awesome music as I\u2019m sure you can imagine \ud83c\udfb5 \ud83c\udf1f \ud83c\udfa4 \ud83c\udf7f @girlgroupmovie<\/a> (more deets to come).”<\/p>\n

A synopsis teases that the film sees Wilson’s character “slapped with a sentence of court-ordered community service” and “seizes the chance to stage a comeback by coaching a group of misfit teen girls for a major record label audition”.<\/p>\n

But she pushes the new group too far, which forces her “to confront the toxic industry that made her \u2013 and the self-destruction she can\u2019t escape”.<\/p>\n

Speaking about Girl Group when it was announced, executive producer Ryan Kroft said: “The timeless magic of a girl group and Rebel\u2019s one-of-a-kind brand of comedy make this film a perfect fit for Live Nation Studios. <\/p>\n

“The hilarious cast and music royalty cameos will make it a must-see for fans around the globe.”<\/p>\n

Girl Group premieres at Toronto International Film Festival on 11 September. A release date is yet to be announced.<\/p>\n
