With preseason now getting underway for many clubs, it will be interesting to see what players from Ireland<\/a> will be offered a chance to impress over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

This time of year is always a big opportunity for youth players. With many more established stars still on holiday due to their participation at the World Cup, quite a few fringe squad members will feature heavily in friendlies over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

If they perform well, they could find themselves in contention for a first team minutes once the season proper gets underway.<\/p>\n

There could be one such example at Manchester United<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jacob Devaney is an exciting prospect, with the 19-year old highly rated by Manchester United after coming through the club’s youth academy. He is also an Ireland U21 international, earning nine caps at that level since making his debut in 2025.<\/p>\n

The midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at St Mirren, his first real exposure to senior football.<\/p>\n

He has not returned to Old Trafford for preseason, where he is already making a big impression. Devaney would start in an unfamiliar centre back role for the game against Wrexham in Helsinki at the weekend, being singled out for praise by manager Michael Carrick after the game (as reported<\/a> by Manchester Evening News journalist Steven Railston):<\/p>\n

JD playing centre-half, it’s not natural to him, he’s played there a little bit, but not a lot and I thought he did, did ever so well.<\/p>\n

He had a really successful few months up there [on loan in Scotland] and it was good to see him kind of take that next step.<\/p>\n

And you could see today the confidence and the assurance in his game, even though he was playing a slightly different position.<\/p>\n

He was vocal, he was commanding and, yeah, I liked a lot of what he did there.<\/p>\n

Can Jacob Devaney make Manchester United & Ireland breakthrough?<\/p>\n

Jacob Devaney is likely to feature throughout Manchester United’s pre-season, potentially including the game against Leeds United at Croke Park next month. The club also have games against the likes of Atletico Madrid, PSG, and AC Milan over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

It remains to be seen whether Devaney can do enough to force his way into the first team picture at Old Trafford, with the club having already made two midfield signings in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans this summer.<\/p>\n

In any case, next season will be a big one for the player as he looks to continue his development.
