{"id":560528,"date":"2026-07-21T09:56:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T09:56:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/560528\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T09:56:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T09:56:10","slug":"its-the-only-way-to-catch-people-calls-for-cctv-in-cork-city-estate-blighted-by-illegal-dumping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/560528\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;It\u2019s the only way to catch people&#8217;: Calls for CCTV in Cork City estate blighted by illegal dumping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Camera enforcement is the only way to tackle ongoing illegal dumping in a Cork City housing estate that has been blighted by discarded furniture as well as household waste, a TD has said.<\/p>\n<p>Orchard Court Estate in Blackpool is frequently littered with loose rubbish, black bags of household waste, and even bulky items like leather armchairs, bedframes, mattresses, and shopping trolleys dumped.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The estate is beside the river, where litter often ends up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Fine Gael TD Colm Burke said Cork City Council had since cleared the waste, but this was an ongoing issue in the estate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s every day there. People living there say that some of their neighbours don\u2019t have bins at all \u2014\u00a0 they\u2019re just taking the easy option.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/5163718_8_articleinlinemobile_IMG_5095.jpeg\" alt=\"Discarded furniture in the estate.\" title=\"Discarded furniture in the estate.\" class=\"card-img\"\/>Discarded furniture in the estate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBut there are outsiders coming in and dumping rubbish too\u201d, he said, including one person who has repeatedly been seen parking a van, dropping refuse, then driving off again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThere\u2019s a number of people at it, but the only way you can catch people like that is on camera.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The resident who contacted Mr Burke about the dumping said: \u201cThis is a regular occurrence. Actually, this is mild. Sometimes it&#8217;s twice as bad.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The resident also called for cameras to tackle the ongoing illegal dumping.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/5163721_8_articleinlinemobile_IMG_5093.jpeg\" alt=\"Illegal dumping is an ongoing issue in the estate.\" title=\"Illegal dumping is an ongoing issue in the estate.\" class=\"card-img\"\/>Illegal dumping is an ongoing issue in the estate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Green Party councillor Oliver Moran proposed the installation of cameras at the estate in early 2025, and was told \u201cthere are new stringent guidelines in relation to the use of CCTV for litter monitoring\u201d and the council would have to examine the suitability of the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In April last year, the council undertook a public consultation on the provision of CCTV cameras in public areas for the prevention of litter and illegal dumping in 13 areas of the city, including Orchard Court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr Burke said he would \u201cabsolutely\u201d support CCTV in the estate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s the only way to catch people like this; you need physical evidence to catch the individual or the car registration plates.
