Sheffield United have completed the signing of Republic of Ireland international defender Matt Doherty on an initial one-year deal with the option of a further year.<\/p>\n
The 34-year-old has made almost 400 appearances for Wolves over two spells but left Molineux this summer.<\/p>\n
Doherty becomes Chris Wilder’s first permanent close-season signing as they look to improve on a 13th-place finish in the Championship last season.<\/p>\n
Doherty told the club\u2019s website: “I spoke to the manager and had a walk round the stadium. Obviously I\u2019ve played there (Bramall Lane) many times before so I know what the atmosphere can be and the manager convinced me with his vision of the team and the club.<\/p>\n
“I\u2019m backing the manager to get the club back into the Premier League and I\u2019m guessing that is the goal for everyone at the end of the day.”<\/p>\n
Wilder added: “There’s no doubting we are getting a player here who knows what it takes to be successful.<\/p>\n
“You’ve got to be a seriously good player to have played as many times as he has for the likes of Wolves, Spurs and Atletico Madrid.<\/p>\n
“Matt is a top pro on and off the pitch; he still has a real desire to achieve things in his career, and he wants to do that here.<\/p>\n
“He’ll drive those standards we are looking for and bring the best out of others in the squad. I’ve talked about culture carriers a lot over the years, and that’s what I see in Matt.”<\/p>\n
Last week, Maria Reynolds made the move to the Blades women’s team from Shamrock Rovers. The 22-year-old centre-half signed a two-year deal with the option of a further deal.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s believed to be a record transfer fee for a SSE Airtricity Women\u2019s Premier Division player.<\/p>\n
Last April, Reynolds was called up to Carla Ward\u2019s Republic of Ireland senior squad for the first time for the World Cup qualifier double-header against Poland.<\/p>\n
