The three-year initiative will support the protection and restoration of protected areas across the Amazon in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Suriname, contributing to the conservation of the planet\u2019s most important biome.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Today, around 15% of the Amazon\u2019s surface has been deforested, and the scientific community highlights the urgent need to strengthen protection and restoration efforts to conserve its biodiversity, reinforce Indigenous communities\u2019 leadership and territorial governance, and preserve the Amazon\u2019s role in regulating the global climate.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Inditex and Conservation International have entered into a new partnership to advance the protection of the Amazon. Under this agreement, Inditex will invest approximately \u20ac6.5 million between 2026 and 2028 to support the establishment of new protected areas and strengthen the management of existing conservation areas across the Amazon.<\/p>\n
The partnership will contribute to the protection of more than two million hectares of Amazon rainforest across six countries in the region, including the Cu\u00e9-Cu\u00e9 and Marabitanas Indigenous Lands in Brazil, the Achuar Nation territory in Ecuador, the Santos Mercado, Gran Manupare and Alto Beni protected areas in Bolivia, and the Camaritagua and Curare-Los Ingleses Indigenous Reserves in Colombia, as well as initiatives in Peru and Suriname.<\/p>\n
The Amazon is a living system of global importance. It is home to nearly 13% of all known species on Earth and stores vast carbon reserves that, if released into the atmosphere, would be equivalent to between 15 and 20 years of global CO\u2082 emissions. Its forests generate \u201cflying rivers\u201d that carry rainfall across South America, sustaining agriculture, freshwater supplies and the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people. In addition, the Amazon contains approximately one quarter of the world\u2019s available freshwater.<\/p>\n
Today, deforestation has already resulted in the loss of 15% of the Amazon\u2019s forest cover. Scientists estimate that if deforestation reaches 20\u201325% of the biome\u2019s area, it will trigger a tipping point with irreversible global consequences for the climate, biodiversity, and the survival of Indigenous communities living in the region.<\/p>\n
In recent years, Inditex has collaborated with Conservation International through the Mountains to Mangroves project to develop strategic plans promoting the conservation and restoration of the Eastern Himalayas\u2019 biological wealth in Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal\u2014an area home to more than one billion people and containing one twelfth of the planet\u2019s biodiversity.<\/p>\n
Through this agreement, Inditex further strengthens its collaboration with Conservation International, following the strategic partnership established in 2023 when the company joined the Regenerative Fund for Nature, committing \u20ac15 million to promote regenerative agriculture and livestock farming practices.<\/p>\n

Together with Indigenous Peoples and local communities, who steward more than 25% of this biome, we hope to protect more of this tropical rainforest and help secure a healthy future both for the communities that depend on it and for global well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n

Protecting biodiversity is essential to maintaining the balance of ecosystems and addressing the challenges posed by climate change,\u201d said \u00d3scar Garc\u00eda Maceiras, CEO of Inditex.<\/p>\n
Inditex\u2019s contributions come from funds raised through charges for paper shopping bags and paper envelopes in its stores, an initiative launched by the Group in 2021 to encourage the use of reusable alternatives.
